WINSTON GLEAVE Obituary
WINSTON GLEAVE
Winston Taylor Gleave, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, educator, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born June 24, 1937, in Salina, Utah, to Virgil Walter Gleave and Melba Taylor Gleave. He grew up in Monroe, Utah, where he developed a love for learning, sports, music, and the outdoors.
Winston graduated from South Sevier High School, where he excelled in academics, music, and athletics, earning recognition as an All-American basketball player and accomplished saxophone player. He continued his education at Brigham Young University, where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in educational psychology.
On a bright and happy day, December 27, 1956, Winston married the love of his life, Karen Mae Morrey of Joseph, Utah, in the Manti Temple. Together they raised four children: Tannie (Mark) Flammer, Lisa (Larry) Laycock, Lance, and Kimberly (Kent) Jepperson. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were a great joy to him, and he often said the best decision of his life was marrying Karen, who inspired him daily to be and do better.
He especially loved his siblings, nephews, nieces, cousins, uncles, aunts, and family from Southern Utah, and he enjoyed spending time with them whenever possible.
Winston dedicated a significant portion of his life to education, serving young people and communities throughout Utah for 44 years. His passion for teaching and leadership led him to begin his career as a high school teacher and basketball coach in Cedar City. He then became principal of Piute High School, where he served for three years. From there, he moved to Manti as the principal of Manti High School before being appointed superintendent of the South Sanpete School District. His final assignment was with the Utah School Boards Association, where he served as executive director until the end of his career. In recognition of his lifelong commitment to education, Winston was honored with the Hero of Education Award for Utah in 2003.
Outside of the classroom, Winston found joy in nature. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, and any outdoor sport in which he could participate. His quick wit, charming smile, and fun-loving personality made him a friend to all who knew him.
Winston is survived by his loving wife, Karen; his four children; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; his sister, Mirreo (Steve) Nelson; and his brother, Kinley Gleave. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Prentiss Gleave; and many cherished friends and loved ones.
Those who knew Winston will remember him as a man of integrity, humor, grit, and warmtha man who gave his heart to education, family, and the great outdoors. A person to whom others could always go for helpful and wise advice and counsel. His influence will live on in the lives of countless students, colleagues, and family members.
