Alfred Moore Obituary

Rev. Alfred Huston Moore, 84, of Roanoke, passed away peacefully in his sleep early December 31, 2009. After a long and hard battle in his later years, he finished the course and has "received the crown laid up for him". He is now experiencing what he loved to quote from John Chapter 14: "In my Father's house are many mansions, I go to prepare a place for you and if I go away I will come again and receive you unto myself that where I am there you may be also...."

Alfred Huston Moore was born February 21, 1925 in Salem, Va. and grew up in Floyd County, Va. He is the son of Jacob Moore and Emma Sweeney Moore. In 1943 1945, he served his nation with the US Navy in Hawaii and the Marshall Islands during the Second World War. After discharge, he indulged his love of adventure by hitchhiking to Texas and back and working on the James River Fleet in Newport News.
In June, 1949 he married Lois Bayse of Salem, Va. and answered God's call to the ministry. After graduation from Allentown Bible Institute in Allentown, Pa., his first pastorate was Christo Pilgrim Holiness Church on Bent Mountain, Va. He also pastored in Christiansburg, Va., Boissevain, Va., and Five Forks Wesleyan Church in Stuart, Va. In addition, he filled many pulpits around southwest VA as a supply pastor. He had a secondary career as a painter at the Salem VA Medical Center and retired in 1987. He loved woodworking and created many beautiful pieces of furniture for himself and his family.
He is survived by two brothers, Edward Moore, of Virginia Beach, Va. and Jack Moore, of Mocksville, N.C.; also, his children and their spouses, Glen and Fran Moore, of Greensboro, N.C., Ronald and Ruth Moore Wilson, of Stuart, Va., Mary Moore Mabe, of Roanoke, Va., James and Roberta Moore, of Kansas City, Mo., Ronnie and Karen Moore Gregory, of Stuart, Va., Raymond and Debbie Moore Laffoon, of Suffolk, Va., Micah and Margaret Ann Moore Travis, of Indianapolis, Ind., John Moore, of Indianapolis, Ind. and Randy and Sandra Moore Bandy, of Bedford, Va. Lois, his wife and partner of 55 years, preceded him in death in 2005 and his daughter, Lois Juanita Moore Owens, in 1972. The family grew to include 20 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren (and counting).
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 4, 2010 at Emmanuel Wesleyan Church in Roanoke, with the Rev. Greg Reynolds officiating. The family will receive visitors Sunday, January 3, 2010 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel. 540-989-3131.
