Alvin William Campbell

Alvin William (Bill) Campbell, 87, of Rocky Mount, Va., passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2010. A United States Army veteran of World War II, he graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in forestry, followed by a career in the lumber industry. He finished his days in happy fellowship at Fleming Chapel in Roanoke. A longtime assistant Boy Scout Master, Bill was a reliable friend, and an exemplary father. He was born in Roanoke on October 26, 1922, and was preceded in death by his mother, Thalia Martin Blackwell; and his first wife, Mary Grey Brown Campbell. He is survived by his wife, Jean Tyson Campbell; a son, Scott Campbell; a daughter, Sarah Beth Campbell; a stepdaughter, Beth Greb; a stepson, Jeffrey Tyson; a stepdaughter, Kim King; a sister, Bette Chilman; a brother, Matt Blackwell; seven stepgranddaughters; two stepgrandsons; two grandsons; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family especially notes gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Rutter, to Franklin neighbors, and to friends at Rocky Mount Presbyterian Church. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, March 19, 2010, at Fairview Cemetery in Narrows. A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at Fleming Chapel in Roanoke.
