Charles Henry Shadel

November 8, 1925 - May 4, 2021

On Tuesday, May 4, 2021, Charles Henry Shadel passed away at the age of 95. Chuck was born on November 8, 1925 in Canton, Ohio to Henry and Anna (Zernechel) Shadel. He attended Miami University in Ohio before enlisting in the Army Air Force in 1943. During World War II, Chuck served as chief gunner on a B-29 in the Pacific Theater. Following the war he attended Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio where he met his bride-to-be on a blind double date. On August 28, 1948, Chuck married Betty (Elizabeth) Ann Abbey. Together they raised two sons, Gregg (wife, Bonnie) and Derrick (wife, Peggy), and welcomed seven grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Chuck was a dedicated husband, father, and wonderful "Gramps".

Chuck worked at General Electric in Burlington, Vt. for 34 years. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. Chuck was a passionate artist and accomplished in painting, carving, and pen and ink styles. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. He enjoyed giving of his time and efforts to others.

Chuck was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Betty "Rusty" Shadel; his sister, Mary Ellen Mani; his brother-in-law, Richard Mani, his parents, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A private service will be held with military honors at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center, Vermont.

In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to your local charity in honor of Chuck's generous nature and the multitude of organizations that he supported over the years.

Growing up Chuck and Rusty were my neighbors for years. I do miss them dearly. I am sending my sincere sympathy to the Shadel family. Chuck passed away the same day that my Father did 38 years ago on May 4th and how ironic. I am in hopes that they are having some great conversations about the military. May he be with Rusty and be at peace. I do have some wooden carvings that he did for me. I will miss his Christmas letters to me and sure do miss them living on Duchess Avenue. I am sending thoughts and prayers to the family at this time. RIP Chuck!

Gregg and Derrick,
When I followed your dad as scoutmaster of Troop 6 he became my mentor, my guide, my teacher. And as the years went on, he and your mother, as well as both of you, became good friends. What wonderful memories I have of the whole Shadel family and our great times together as we guided many a young boy through their years in scouting. Your father had a long and productive life, and he left a legacy of honor that we should all emulate.
Take care my friends,
Larry O'Keefe
