Mary Conover Obituary

After a 100 years of quiet faithfulness, the Lord has called home Mary Louise (Perry) Conover, of Durhamville, NY. She passed away, peacefully at her home, into the loving arms of her Savior, on March 2, 2025, surrounded by her beloved four children, Robert Conover, Durhamville, Mary Conover Stedman, Oneonta, AL, Linda Conover Hopkins (Norman), Cathy Conover Rice (Ed), Oneida.

She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Kathy Brodock, James Stedman, Kevin Stedman, Karl Hopkins, Karen Hopkins, Kristina Stephens, Jennifer Proper and Dennis Rice; fifteen great-grandchildren, Nicole Brodock, Joshua Brodock, Olivia Agan, Emma Anderson, Cherish Brodock, Aaron Brodock, Victoria Brodock, Tyler Stedman, Axl Stedman, Megan Stephens, Peyton Stephens, Michaela Moore, Andrew Wilson, Aiden Proper and Kira Proper; ten great-great-grandchildren, Javelin, Jude, Ophelia, Sophia, Christopher, David, Winifred, Levi, Freyja and Fergus.

Mary was preceded by her parents, the late Edward and Frances Smith Perry; brothers, Edward (Marge) Perry and Frank (Marion) Perry; sisters, Betty (Russell) Smith, Charlotte (Art) Martzloff and Edna (Charlie) Ammon; and great-granddaughter, Mary Nicole Brodock.

Mary is remembered by all who knew her as gentle and caring, her meek spirit wasn't weak though, having been born during the Depression, struggle was not foreign to her. In 1943, at 19 years old, she married a farmer, Vernon Karl Conover and together the two of them raised their family on a dairy farm in Durhamville, NY. They were married for 36 years, when at the age of 55, Mary was widowed in 1979. She never remarried, but remained faithful to her family and farm of 75 years.

She never complained, even through losing her husband, walking through four decades of widowhood and the horrific fire that took her barn in 1994, she was content to face life's challenges from her kitchen table, with a cup of tea, a newspaper, a pen and notebook with scratched out reminders. She was the quiet, steady rock of her family. While life and experience creased her brow and added their laugh lines around her soft blue eyes, time did nothing to her vibrant personality, she was grace and beauty. It's with incredible gratitude we thank the Lord for giving her to us and for allowing her to enrich the lives of everyone who knew her.

Family and friends are invited to call on Friday, March 7, 4-6 p.m. at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, followed by a service at 6 p.m. Interment, in the spring, in Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation, in Mary's memory, to the First Presbyterian Church of Rome, 108 W. Court St., Rome, NY 13440 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (https://www.stjude.org/donate/donate-to-st-jude.html?sc_icid=header-btn-donate-now).

One day as James Stedman were riding along next to the Erie Canal in Rome, Sabrina Yells stop! James does so with much wonder, out jumps Sabrina who picks up the two foot snapping Tuttle with a smile as she dumps it into the bed of the pick up. James too astonished to speak rolls on and finally says, um that's a snapping turtle are you crazy?!? What?!? Says Sabrina who p try overs with a more crazy idea to put it into Grandmas pond! No!!!! GG will get you! So alas the turtle returned to the canal after a small struggle to get out of a tree he got caught in when gingerly chucked avoiding the snappy bits.

If you wanted to find an example of a person to model your life after, you didn´t need to look any further than Mary Conover. As a kid I watched her more than carry her share of the hard work of a dairy farm, manage the homestead, raise four children and mentor many others. Never a cross word, always a warm smile, and a woman of strong faith. Everything I heard her say and everything I saw her do in the 70 plus years I knew her, all was with unconditional love. Even though she knew my correct name, I knew a teaching moment was coming when she would call me George. She was and still is loved by all who knew her. Some called her Mary, some called her Mrs. C, but she will always be Mom to me.
