Virgil Washburn Obituary

Virgil E. Washburn, age 91, of Myrtle Beach, SC, and formerly of Rome, NY, passed away December 7, 2022. Virgil was born in Rome, NY, on January 10, 1931, the son of Leland and Edith (Walker) Washburn. He served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954. Virgil was a mechanic in the early years until he pursued his dream of becoming a tractor trailer driver.
Virgil married Charlotte Roth in 1959. They shared a beautiful marriage until her death in 1990. He was lucky enough to find love again and married Marilyn Miller in 2000 until her death in 2016. Virgil loved to volunteer at Sears Gas Station museum and shared his knowledge with the guests that stopped in.
Virgil is survived by his two daughters, Wendy Bowers (Michael Kimmel) and Susan Jordan (Matthew Byrnes); one brother, Harry (Fran) Washburn; grandchildren, Avery (Corey) Warcup and Emily (Rory) Moylan; great-grandchildren, Finnegan, Beau, and Colton. Virgil was also blessed with bonus grandchildren, Rachel (Chris) Hall, Sarah (Max) Edwards and Noah (Marissa) Bowers along with their children Sloan, Rowan and Briar Hall; Bennett and Violet Edwards; Drake and Harper Bowers. Virgil also leaves behind Gwynn Jones and Todd Bowers and a special sister in law, Clara Washburn.
Virgil was predeceased by his beloved granddaughter, Elise Jordan; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, George (Rose), Luke (Barb), Elmer (Lou), and Frank. Virgil loved nothing more than going to all the coffee shops in Rome. You could almost tell the time by what coffee shop he was in. Virgil loved his family with all his heart and would do anything for them. All that knew Virgil loved him.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Prince-Boyd & Hyatt Home for Funerals, Inc., 210 W. Court St., Rome. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the Home for Funerals; Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Though Virgil only touched our lives for a barely moment in his long life, it was a rewarding and lasting impression.
We miss him dearly, and are blessed to have met him.
