Julie Dunlap Obituary

Julie Lynn Dunlap 1972—2017
Julie Lynn Dunlap died unexpectedly at her home on February 3, 2017, at the age of 45. Julie leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her children, Selena and Daniel; sister, Cathy Dunlap; and father, Lawrence Dunlap. Her mother, Nancy Dunlap, preceded her in death. Julie was born in Rockford on January 26, 1972, and was a lifelong resident of the area. Julie was an extremely gifted student who received her bachelor's degree in special education, with an emphasis on Deaf and Hard of Hearing, from Illinois State University. She then went on to get her masters from National Louis University and continued to take additional coursework during the summers to further her knowledge. Julie was an amazing teacher who was very dedicated to her students and their families. In addition, Julie was musically talented, enjoyed cooking and was a whiz at all things involving technology. Religion always played an important role in her life and she was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church and later GPS Faith Community Church. Julie had a very kind soul. She had a loving and generous heart and was always giving to others. In all that she did, Selena and Daniel remained the most important part of Julie's life.
A visitation is scheduled from 4 to 5:30 p.m. February 9th, at GPS Faith Community Church, which is located at 10714 N. 2nd Street in Machesney Park, IL 61115. A celebration of life service will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

I was so sad to hear the news about Julie. She worked with many of our patients over the years and she was so dedicated and cared so much - her students were lucky to have her - we all were! Sending her family much love and prayers. Sally

Julie, we had many good times in college and I am so glad I was your roomie one year and that we kept in touch through the years! I was just thinking of maybe making a trip to Rockford this summer to see you and the kids! Sorry I couldn't make it to your funeral and visitation-I was on a mission trip and out of the country. I know the impact you had on your students and kids' lives was great! There is a hole that will forever be empty but I know that you are dancing with Jesus right now and I can't wait to see you again in heaven! Goodbye my friend!

In loving memory of Julie Dunlap; who was the best Hearing Impaired Advocate my daughters had in the Durand and Rockford School Districts.

Julie was a bulldog when it came to fighting for what was right, especially when it came to kids and animals. Even when she was frustrated she would have a smile on her face and would say "so help me..." When it came to Selena and Daniel, she fought tirelessly to get them the best services and provide them with the best life that she could. She is one of my heroes and will be greatly missed.

When I heard about your death, I cried my eyes out. I could've seen you at the Christmas party for the deaf/HOH kids. I didn't come and I feel guilty. I could've seen you after all these years... I'm never letting go of that folder that you kept after all these years. You were a big part of my life, and I will always remember you. There was just too many good memories that we had. I will miss you and I'll see you again some day.. <3

Julie was always an amazing example of who we all should strive to be. Her heart knew no boundaries. I'm grateful that she and I were able to connect again later in life (even if it was only on FB, and multiple states away from each other) and witness what an incredible mom she was to Selena and Daniel. Blessing to the kids and the whole family.

I first met Julie at Roaring Twenties, and we had become pretty active members of the group. We lost touch and years later we crossed paths at the Backyard Grill, on Tuesdays (Kids night). We both would bring our kids after school to enjoy the special on children's meals and take advantage of the chance to build memories. My family is deeply saddened by the loss of such an outstanding woman and mother. It was a privilege to know her as a friend and as a sister-in-Christ.

It is with a heavy heart that I post here about my dear friend, Julie. Julie and I worked for many years together at Christ United Methodist Church in children's music and with many musical productions. Julie was an excellent singer, too and would cheerfully sing and sign everything along with the kids. Her generous spirit and loving disposition were a joy to work alongside. I appreciated the opportunity to have shared those years in ministry with Julie. She loved Jesus with all her heart. She also loved her two adopted children with incredible energy, love, and nurture. She was so supportive and interested in our journey we adopted our two boys. I remember a recent visit we had at Walmart--both of us catching up with one another for about 20 minutes in the middle of the produce section. I was struck by how our conversation felt like it had just picked up from the last time we talked. She was so present in the conversation and it seemed like she drove to Walmart just to talk with me. Her gift of generosity and hospitality was within our conversation. She always treated me with respect and made me feel special and important. I will miss that.

I know she will be terribly missed and I pray for the continued well-being and support of her children. May God surround them with God's peace and all the love they need during this difficult time.

RIP Julie. You are missed already.
