Amy Lorine Bartholomew, the youngest and last survivor of eleven children, was born January 25, 1911, in Folsom to Ulysses and Katherine Sweet. She grew up in a home located near Folsom, CA, and graduated from Folsom's Howard School, Sacramento High School, and Heald's Business College of Sacramento.
She was preceded in death by her husband Alvin in 2000. Amy married Alvin Dorsey Bartholomew on March 19, 1933, in Sacramento. Amy and Alvin lived in Elk Grove, and devoted their entire sixty-seven years of married life to raising their three children and supporting the community of Elk Grove. Their first home was on the corner of 2nd Avenue and Main Street (now Elk Grove Blvd.). Their second home was built on the corner of Bradshaw and Elk Grove Blvd. in 1949, where their son Hal and his family currently reside.
Throughout their married life, Amy and Alvin attended the Elk Grove United Methodist Church, where Amy was President of the United Methodist Women from 1969 to 1976. She was also active in the Elk Grove Book Club, Elk Grove Garden Club, Native Daughters of the Golden West, Eastern Star, Republican Women of Elk Grove, 4-H, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Parent Teachers Association, and Rotary Inner Wheel. In addition, she was a Charter Member of the Elk Grove Western Festival Committee, the Elk Grove Historical Society, the Methodist Hospital Auxiliary, and the Elk Grove Convalescent Hospital Auxiliary. Amy and Alvin were significantly involved in the Elk Grove business community. Their business affiliations included: C. V. Bartholomew & Son Land Leveling, the Elk Grove Shopping Center, and the Elk Grove Convalescent Hospital. They were also primary proponents of cityhood for Elk Grove.
Amy is survived by her son-in-law Gordon and daughter Nancy Douglass of Orinda; daughter-in-law Jacque and son Wayne Bartholomew of Davis; daughter-in-law Beverly Brautigam & son Hal Bartholomew of Elk Grove; grandchildren, Marla, Blake, Bret Bartholomew, Sheryl Tolson and great-grandchildren, Kendall, Tommy and James of Elk Grove and granddaughter Lori Cianfichi and great-grandson Domenic of Walnut Creek.
Friends are welcome to attend memorial services Saturday, January 28 at 1:00pm in the ELK GROVE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 8986 Elk Grove Blvd. in Elk Grove. Interment was private in South East Lawn Memorial Park. Arrangements by ELK GROVE FUNERAL CHAPEL. Memorial remembrances are preferred to the church or a charity of your choice.
