Eugene Abravanel Obituary

Eugene Victor Abravanel passed away April 17, 2012. Eugene was born in Havana, Cuba. His mother was Ashkenazi-Jewish from New York, his father a Shephardic Jew from Gallipoli. They met on a ship and had a romance—and a marriage—that lasted many years. Gene's father was a perfumer in Havana and the family stayed there for several years after the revolution. The Abravanel family immigrated to the United States, and Gene graduated from the UC Davis Medical School in 1974. Gene worked for many years as an ER physician at the UC Davis Medical Center. Gene was also a violinist with the Camellia Symphony Orchestra. He is survived by family in Denver and many of his patients. He will be remembered for his wit, intelligence, cooking skills and mimicry. He saved lives.

Hi I´m a distant cousin- my father was related to Gene(Saul Rosenfeld). I´m trying to find out the name of Gene´s mother.
Can you help me piece together my family history?

Your friendship will truly be missed and I hope you have truly found peace. My boys miss you very much too. You will always be remembered and treasured. I will miss your sarcastic dry wit most of all. Your friend, James

I played with Gene at the Chico Chamber Music Workshops and he had me over to his house on many occasions to do chamber music with Burke Schuchmann. He brought me to the Japanese restaurant Hana Tsubaki and I had my first sushi with him. He was a really good man and a kind person and I miss him.

I was saddened to learn of my cousin's passing. He was one of four of us named after our grandfather, Yom Tov Abravanel. I knew him from my visits to Havana as a child and teenager. We have been out of touch for many decades, but I had hoped he would welcome contact at some point in the future. My sympathy to his family and friends.
