George Cate Obituary

George Forster Cate

February 7, 1946 - July 30, 2025

Sacramento, California - George Forster Cate, 79, passed away peacefully in his home in Natomas on July 30, 2025. George was born on February 7, 1946, in Glendale, California, to Vivian Forster Cate and Lewis William Cate. After spending his early years in Fullerton, George's family moved to Sacramento, where he graduated from Encina High School in 1963. George attended U.C. Berkeley on a baseball scholarship, proudly wearing jersey number 33. George also joined the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity.

In 1967, George graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a degree in Business. Then he served in U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. When George completed his service, he traveled in a VW bus with his friend Rabbit for a year to 21 countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa. In 1970, George returned to Sacramento to give his sister, Janice Cate, away at her wedding to Eric French.

In 1971, George got his first "real" job with the California Legislative Analyst's Office. Most of George's professional lifeover 28 yearswas dedicated to lobbying on behalf of the California Medical Association and the California Hospital Association with the goal of attaining access to quality health care for all Californians. George worked for the California legislature or as a lobbyist until he retired in 2008.

Outside of work, George dedicated himself to raising his son, Adam Drescher Cate, who was born in 1983. After Adam was grown, George found his "late love in life"golf. George played multiple times a week and even took home a few tournament trophies before injuries prevented him from playing. In his more recent years, George enjoyed lunches with family and friends, watching the S.F. Giants games, and visiting with his granddaughter, Kaylee Vivian Cate.

George was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Marcia Lee Cate Solberg. George is survived by his son Adam, granddaughter Kaylee, sister Jan, and many other loving family members and friends.

George was a friend and valued colleague. He was easy to work with on important medical issues of our days in the Capitol. He was knowledgeable and always had time for both serious discussions and joking around. Just thinking of George brings back good memories.

Heartfelt condolences to his family from the Barnaby family

Rest in Power George Cate! George worked with my Dad Jay Michael at the CMA and CAPP I believe. I remember well when Adam was born, and the immense love and care George had for Adam I lost track of George once he moved from the house on Keane... George had a huge personality and passion for his work. He had a unique presence that seemed larger than life, akin to my Dads; I think that´s why they got along so well. May his memory live a lifetime in Adam, Kaylee and all friends and family. With Love and respect, The Michael Family.
