For some reason, I dreamed of my Boy Scout days last night, the years 1966 - 1969, when Jerry Keating was our scout master. So, I googled his name to find his obituary.
I remember Jerry Keating as demanding but fair, supportive and encouraging equally to all the boys in our Troop 406. Back then, at my age of 11 - 14, I had no real role models for how to grow up nor much involvement with my father or the dads of my classmates. Jerry Keating was inspiring and showed faith in all of us by assigning camping planning and duties that challenged us to do our best, take responsibility for ourselves and others, and be accountable for our actions. If it had not been for the Scouts, and Jerry's leadership, I think I would have found myself cut adrift and very isolated in my early teen years. Thanks to Jerry, I found a place where I felt I belonged.
His ongoing, and unwavering commitment to our troop really impressed me, especially because he had such extensive family and work responsibilities of his own, and he gave so much of his time to us boys. He was a great example of what an involved father could be.
I remember he attended daily Mass, and treated us all equally, without prejudice or discrimination. He never coddled us and he made it clear his expectations were that we could become self-reliant and step up do doing tasks for ourselves.
Thank you, Jerry, for all you gave and for believing in me and all the other boys in Troop 406.
