Julius Calderone Obituary

Julius "Jay" Calderone

August 2, 1928 - May 8, 2025

Sacramento, California - Julius "Jay" Calderone was born in Detroit, Michigan, and passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025, in Sacramento, CA. He was 96 years of age, and the loving husband of Jeannette Calderone for 60 years. Jay received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology from San Jose State University. After serving his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, he resumed his education and obtained his Doctorate in Microbiology from the University of California at Los Angeles. Jay taught microbiology and related courses at Sacramento State University for over 20 years.

Jay was a passionate outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life, which was facilitated by his and Jeannette's choice to make a home very close to the American River. He enjoyed tying his own flies and testing them against local lunkers. He also enjoyed ocean fishing, and diving for abalone.

Jay was preceded in death by his wife Jeannette, and his brother Dr. Robert "Bob" Calderone. Jay is survived by several nieces and nephews: Dr. Lisa Key, Suzette Calderone, Robert Calderone, Chris Calderone, Kristin Salazar, David Brice, Tom Brice and Janet Brice. Jay and Jeannette were members of the Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church. His internment will be private.
