Richard Myers Obituary

Richard W. Myers, MD, 71, passed away peacefully in the presence of his immediate family and close friends on January 15th, in Rancho Mirage, California. He was born in 1944 in Nocona, Texas to Ike and Charlene Myers and was big brother to his beautiful sisters, Linda (Hollar) and Mary (Tupacz). He is survived by his loving wife, Judee Lynch Myers; his children, Kara Myers (Greg), David Myers (Rebecca) and Michelle Wiseman (Joe). He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Kelle D'Alessio (Doug); Kara and David's mother, Mary Cotton Myers and 5 grandchildren, Isabella, Dahlia, Simone, Max and Emily. Rick grew up in Nocona, Texas, where he graduated from Nocona. High School in 1962 and played center, #50 for the Nocona Indians. He attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas where he earned a Bachelor's in Chemistry. Rick earned his Medical Doctorate at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1970. He then moved to California where he completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of California. He then moved to Bethesda, Maryland in 1972 to 1974 to serve his country as a military surgeon with the US Public Health Service as well as a Clinical Associate, focusing on cardiology at the National Institute of Health. Rick further supported the US PHS and NIH as a consultant instructor and Clinical Professor. In 1974, Rick returned to California to complete his residency in Nuclear Medicine at Stanford University Medical Center. Rick's professional career started at Herrick Hospital in Berkley, California, where he was named Director of Nuclear Medicine. He then joined Mercy General Hospital of Sacramento. It was at Mercy General where Rick formed his close partnership with The Sister of Mercy who are committed to supporting impoverished and underserved. communities. After Mercy, Rick became the Medical Director at Roseville PET Imaging Center and a Chairman with the Nuclear Medicine Division of Radiological Associates of Sacramento. He served this group as Chairman, Vice President and President before he retired in 2012. As a thought leader within nuclear medicine and radiology, Rick published and collaborated on many studies, articles, and other publications to support the continued development of his specialty. His work and efforts paved the way for PET detection of early stages of cancers across the globe. While taking great pride and satisfaction in his professional life, Rick also celebrated his life, his community of friends and family. He enjoyed a rich and full life. He loved traveling, reading, visiting with friends and boating. He was a member of the Sacramento Yacht Club, Sea Ray Boat Club and the Antique Classic Boat Society. His enduring sense of humor, generosity, and enthusiasm for deep conversation was appreciated and will be remembered by many. A celebration of his life will be held on February 20, 2016 at 11:00 AM at The Lodge at Westshore, 4200 Hovnanian Drive, Sacramento, CA 95834.
