Robert "Bob" Joseph Alves passed away at the age of 80 on October 7, 2024, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
Bob was born on December 14, 1943, in King City to parents Joseph Perry Alves and Mildred Ray (Mathias) Alves. One of three children, he was brother to John and Kathleen. They grew up on the Alves Ranch on Metz Road.
During his senior year of high school, Bob joined the Navy serving on the Henry B. Wilson from 1962 to 1965 and the Navy reserves for another three years from 1965 to 1968. Upon his return from the Navy, Bob began employment with Union Carbide. While working full-time with Union Carbide, he also attended classes at Hartnell College in the evening studying electrical works/engineering. Thus began a long successful career as an electrician with Basic American Foods, ConAgra, where he retired from, and with his own business Alves Electric. Bob's knowledge of the equipment, machinery, and workings of the old ConAgra facility drew him back to the facility to work as a consultant to Rava Ranches. Bob was always ready and willing to help with any project, big or small. One of his last projects was helping his stepdaughter, Kelly, and granddaughter, Sierra, with installation of all things electrical in their new coffee shop. He was so proud of the work he did in the shop, mostly because of the fact he was able to help get the shop up and running. He was our biggest fan.
Bob first married Margaret (Peggy) Teague in 1965 and together they had three daughters, Stephanie, Cindy, and Lori. Growing up, 4-H was a big part of his daughter's lives; therefore, it was a big part of his. Bob volunteered as a "lamb leader" for nine years from 1980 to 1988. Together, they raised somewhere between seventy to ninety lambs, too many to count. And that was just his daughter's; needless to say, he was a busy man. So, it was no surprise to find him at the fair year after year supporting his grandchildren and great-grandchildren with their fair projects.
On March 5, 1986, Bob re-married Diana Mellick (Acosta). Bob and Diana celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary this year. With this blended family, Bob went from being a father of three daughters to seven. This new blended family brought new hobbies to each; Bob and his girls were avid snow skiers, while Diana and her girls, Kelly, Tricia, Stacy and Jennifer, were avid water skiers. Together the family shared many vacations and outings enjoying both sports.
After a long hunt for their retirement home, Bob and Diana settled in Lockwood. During his final days, Bob could be found pulling wire and installing equipment for the remodel of their new home. He spent many afternoons running their dogs, Toby and Bear, around their property, and working on his tractors. He loved working on those tractors. Bob loved life in the country.
When asked what one word best describes Bob, "go-to-guy" is the best answer. Bob was there to help anyone at any time with whatever was needed. To the family, Bob was love, strength, stability, and warmth. He will be missed tremendously.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents Joseph Perry Alves and Mildred Ray (Mathias) Alves.
He is survived by his wife Diana (Mellick) Alves; daughters Stephanie (Chris) Alves Kirk, Cindy Alves, Lori Alves, Kelly Green, Tricia (Eric) Martinus, Stacy (Jesse) Smith, and Jennifer Acosta; grandchildren Brandon (Jessica) Ortiz, Dustin Ortiz, Shyanne (Cody) Fultz Rasmussen, Sierra (Jared) Stamps, Summer Green (Jeremiah Ramirez), Brynn Smith, Tatum Smith, Jessilyn Smith, Jonah Martinus, Jan Martinus; great-grandchildren Brandon Ortiz, Gabe Ortiz, Joel Ortiz, Eli Ortiz, Harper Stamps, Cole Stamps, Ryen Ramirez, and Crue Ramirez; brother John Alves (Elvira) and sister Kathleen Rodriguez, and nieces and nephews.
