David Barnes Obituary

David William Barnes, 70, of Salisbury, NC, passed away on May 28, 2024, at his home after courageously battling cancer. He was born in Rochester, NY on February 18, 1954, son of Donald and Mary Barnes. He is survived by his parents, Mary Barnes and Donald Barnes, stepmother Brenda Barnes, his loving spouse Donna Lynn Barnes, and his mother-in-law Eleanor Metcalfe. He was predeceased by Jim and Helen Metcalfe, his in-laws. He is also survived by his two sons, Bryan Barnes (Holly), and Bobby Barnes (Kristina), his siblings: brother Danny, sister Donna Geary (Rick), and step brother Kent Strege (Katie), three grandchildren: Cordelia, Chase, and Ciena Barnes, and three step-grandchildren: Ava, Ronan, and Meara Wells. He is also survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Bob Metcalfe (Donna), James Metcalfe (Darcy), Doug Metcalfe (Brian), Tracey Allchin (Mike), Tom Metcalfe (Elva), Jimmy Metcalfe (Amy), and several nieces and nephews.
He married his high school sweetheart on October 5, 1974, and Dave and Donna were celebrating their 50th year of marriage together this year. In the 1980's, the Metcalfe/Barnes family helped revive an abandoned drag race track in Leicester, NY. In August 1986, Motorcity Raceway and ¼ Mile Pit Stop opened for business. The race track hosted IHRA National Events in the late 1980's and early 1990's, of which David was an integral part.
During his lifetime, David worked at Rochester Products, a division of GM, for over 10 years and he also drove tractor trailers for over 10 years. In 2008, he started his own plumbing business here in Salisbury, NC, called David Barnes Plumbing and Repairs. He remained in business till April 2023. He was voted Runner Up Best Plumber in 2010's Best Rowan Magazine and had many loyal customers.
He was mechanically gifted. He could fix anything and was always willing to lend a hand to help. He loved his family and especially loved being a Papa to his grandchildren. He was a member of Saint Matthew's Lutheran Church in Salisbury.
Visitation will be held Saturday, June 8, 2024, from 11:30 am - 12:45 pm at Saint Matthew's Lutheran Church. Memorial service will follow in the church at 1 pm.
