John Donald "Donny" Barber, 65, of Salisbury, passed away on Friday, June 30, 2023 at his home surrounded by family. He was born on September 22, 1957 in Hope Mills to the late Donald Barber and Peggy Dow Barber. John proudly served his country in the United States Navy and United States Army. John was a graduate of Liberty University with a Bachelors Degree and a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church of China Grove. He was a Retired Captain from the US Army and was an Iraq War Veteran. He also retired from the South Boston Police Department in Virginia. John was a lifetime member of DAV, VFW, Vietnam Veterans Association of NC, and was a member of the Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post #342. John was a past Commander of AMVETS Post 845 of Rockwell and a member of the AMVETS Riders Post 845. John was also a member of Furniture Land Chapter Antique Automobile Club of America and the Thomasville Memorial Day Ceremony Committee. He was very active in the Boy Scouts of America as an Adult Leader for Troop 4324, and Pack 324 as well as an Assistant Scout Master for Troop 4328 and Troop 324. John was awarded the National AMVETS Leadership award in Scouting for 2022. In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his sister, Diane Barber. John is survived by his wife, Ann Thomas Barber of Salisbury; children, Ann Elizabeth Wiles and husband Jeremy of Rockwell, and Layton Everett Barber of the Home; granddaughters, Juno Wiles and Jessa Toby Wiles; brothers, Jesse D. Barber and wife Karen of Sevierville, TN, and Roy N. Barber and wife Stephanie of Lexington; sister, Peggy Kay Stone and husband Jimmy of Lexington; brother-in-law, Richard L. Thomas and wife Sue of Rocky Mount, VA; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends Keith and Linda Hensley, and Queen Williams. Visitation and funeral service were held Monday, July 3, 2023, from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, officiated by Minister Lucas Safrit. A Military Graveside Service will be held 11:00 am Friday, July 7, 2023 at the Salisbury National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ruby's Pantry (4914 Old Beatty Ford Rd, China Grove, NC 28023) or please take your family out for a meal as a family in his honor.
