Romas Shuping Obituary

Romas Henry Shuping transitioned from this world on March 3, 2025, at age 86.

He was born to the late Arthur J. Shuping, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Young on June 27, 1938. Romas was raised by a large and loving family, and his father married Margaret Ray on May 21, 1944, when she became the mother of seven children. She was an angel who entered their lives. Romas met Sarah Burch at Boyden High School, the beginning of a lifelong love.

They were married in 1955 and are survived by their children: Sarah Schiemann and her husband, Mark, of Salisbury, Steve Shuping of Salisbury, Mark Shuping and his wife, Patty of Salisbury, and Lisa Dunn and her husband, Ronnie, of Albemarle. Romas is also survived by his grandchildren - Elizabeth Schiemann, Catherine Schiemann and her husband, John Polese, Rebecca Wrights and her husband, Nate, Joshua Schiemann, Christian Shuping and his wife, Miranda, Sydney Huneycutt and her husband, Dalton, Jonathon Shuping, Gracey Dunn, and Steven Shuping; and three great-grandchildren - Phinley Dunn (deceased), Gwendolyn Huneycutt, and Wyatt Shuping. He is also survived by his siblings Leda Belk of Salisbury, Thomas Shuping (Pat) of Atlantic Beach, Susan Linn of Salisbury, and sister-in-law Jean Shuping of Jamestown. Romas was predeceased by his wife, Sarah, and his son, Romas Shuping, Jr., and siblings Arthur “AJ” Shuping, Jr., Mary Picking, Robert “Bob” Shuping, Jack Nelson Shuping, Billy Lee Shuping, Jane Corriher, and Richard “Dick” Shuping.

Romas attended First United Church of Christ in Salisbury where he sang in the choir, served on the Council and participated in the Men's Brotherhood, organized the deacons for communion, and served as rector. He was also active in the Rowan Civitans and Jaycees. He was a Master Mason and 32deg. Scottish Rite, a 43 year member of Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge # 576 A. F. & A. M., and a member of the Oasis Temple.

Romas loved his work, because he loved being around people - and he took great pride in his salesmanship from a young age when he sold greeting cards, and worked in sales management with Rowan Distributing Company and Pepperidge Farm. He retired and kept working - as a school bus driver and ice cream man, and we loved walking up Maupin Avenue to get a scoop from him.

While Romas enjoyed working - he truly loved being surrounded by his people - if you ever ate dinner at his house, you were “his people”. Whether it was heading up the dining room table on Sunday afternoon, or sitting in the den or on one of the porches visiting, he found great joy in his relationships with others.

The family will greet friends and relatives beginning at 10:00 AM on Saturday March 29, 2025, in the fellowship hall at First United Church of Christ, 207 W. Horah St., Salisbury, NC 28144. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM in the sanctuary at First United Church of Christ, with interment for both Sarah and Romas at Memorial Park Cemetery, in Salisbury following the service with Masonic Rites.

We are especially thankful for support from loving caregivers - Sharon Cumberbatch, Jessica Shafer, Ann Marie Jacaruso, and Marsha Frye. Also, we are grateful for the attentive staff of Rowan Regional Medical Center and Glenn Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury.

In lieu of flowers, his family would appreciate donations to Glenn Kiser Hospice of Rowan County or Shriners Hospitals for Children on Romas' behalf.
