Afton Faust Obituary

Afton McKean Faust 8/2/1916 ~ 11/22/2003  Our loving mother, grandmother, and sister Afton McKean Faust passed away on November 22, 2003. She will be remembered for her independence, perfectionism and persistence.  Afton was born August 2, 1916 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Corneila A. Millicam and Franklin Lane McKean. She married Augustus F. Faust on April 30, 1941 in the Salt Lake Temple. She was a very supportive wife who kept their family in order while he spent many summers abroad. As an active member of the LDS Church, she had many callings including ward librarian and Relief Society president. Afton was also an energetic volunteer at the Family History Library for many years, where she was able to share her passion for genealogy. She was also a wonderful cook and seamstress. Afton was an avid basketball and baseball fan, and loved attending games at Derk's Field. She was a voracious reader and could converse, intelligently, on almost any subject. She is survived by her daughters: Martha Smith, Tina (Todd Dustman), Chelsea Faust; 10 grandchildren; sister, Barbara Smoot and sisters-in-law, Eileen McKean and Ruth McKean. Preceded in death by her husband, Gus; son, Philip, one grandchild; sister, Edith Coray and brothers, Franklin L. and Thomas M. McKean. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2003, at 12:00 Noon at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 So. 2300 East, where friends may call Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday morning from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. prior to the services. Interment: Murray City Cemetery. 5600 South Vine Street (730 East). Funeral Directors: The Holbrook Mortuary.

Although it's been many years since I've seen or spoken with Aunt Afton, I've always remembered her gentle nature, wonderful smile, and soft spoken manner. Through her love of our family's history, Afton's work on our geneology made our ancestors come to life. Afton will always be in our hearts as are all our family members who have passed before us. Afton amazed me. She was this fine lady who would not let anything or anyone stop her.

She would go up and down the halls of the Chateau Brickyard in her wheelchair for her exercise. I did not understand what she was doing and when I first arrived as administrator I would often ask if I could assist her. In a polite tone she would decline the assistance and it was her husband Gus who finally explained what she was doing.

At times Gus would come into my office and he would tell me about his sweet Afton. He would explain that she was crippled and blind and a tear would come to his eye. He understood how amazing she was.

God's speed on your new adventure Afton and thank you for your example, kindness and sweet spirit.

We sure love Afton and Gus. They were great examples to us. May their children, grandchildren and other loved ones be blessed with peace.
