Daniel McGrew Obituary

Daniel Thomas McGrew

March 1, 1948 - April 9, 2022

Salt Lake City, UT—Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away at home on April 9, 2022 surrounded by his loving family after a nine month battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He was born March 1, 1948 in Salt Lake City to Barbara Taft and Frank Loflin, later adopted by Raymond McGrew. Dan was raised in San Francisco and South San Francisco and graduated from El Camino High School in 1966.

He was a proud member of the United States Navy, working on the flight deck of the USS Enterprise. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War where he was a member of the US Naval Construction Battalion, the Seabees. He also served in the Naval Reserve.

Dan married Charlene Blosch on May 1, 1972 and together they had three children; Jason, Patrick (Brenna), and Jane Hamblin (Clayton). They had four granddaughters; Aja Sigourney (Anders), Isabella, Avery, and Kieran Hamblin. Dan was a loving grandfather that could easily be persuaded, and loved it.

He completed a plumbing apprenticeship and went on to earn an associates degree from Salt Lake Community College. Dan worked as a plumber for many years and was a proud member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union. He retired after working as a building engineer for 31 years at "170" (S. Main).

Dan was an avid fly fisherman, outdoorsman, hunter, birdwatcher, and woodworker. He loved spending time outside, working in his garden and making sure his yard was well kept. After retirement he volunteered for many years with the VA and at LeeKay Shooting Range.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Charlene. Beloved children, grandchildren, and twin brother, Philip McGrew (Mary). Preceded in death by his mother, father, numerous aunts and uncles, and loving grandparents Ivan and Alda Taft.

Viewings will be held at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple Salt Lake City, UT on Thursday, April14th from 6-8pm and Friday, April 15th from 10-10:45am, with the service to follow.

Dan was one of the most amazing people to visit with during his volunteer time at the Vet Center. He always seemed to have a smile on his face and an eagerness to help out. I remember several times when we would have an issue with our facility that would require our land lord to send someone over to fix it, Dan would look at the issue i.e. broken door spring and just make the repair. I will miss Dan as there are few people in this world that could could offer advice and mentorship like he could. I know our Vet Center will feel his loss and those that were blessed to work with him will honor his memory. We love you Navy Dan
