Jacob Dacierno Obituary

Jacob A. Dacierno

2005 ~ 2025

Jacob Alexander Dacierno of Salt Lake City, UT died Tuesday morning, August 12 at the age of 20 years. His death was ruled a suicide by gunshot wound.

Jacob was the son of Amanda Christine Oyler D'Acierno and Joseph Edward D'Acierno (Jacob's mother simplified Jacob's last name compared to his father). He was born on January 30, 2005, in Mountain View, CA. While Jacob was still an infant his parents divorced, and his mother moved back to Utah to be near her parents and Jacob's grandparents James and Clare Oyler in Salt Lake City. He attended Cosgriff Catholic Elementary School, Hillside Middle School, Highland High School, and the Technical Campus of Salt Lake Community College.

Jacob was born two months premature and spent his first month in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). He caught up quickly and from an early age he was highly coordinated and loved making Lego constructions of increasing complexity well beyond his age, and also loved working with his grandfather in his shop.

Jacob needed stability in his daily routines, had trouble adjusting to unplanned changes, and disliked noisy or crowded events, which became especially evident in high school. During Covid he worked at home and was a straight-A student, but when school re-opened and he returned to Highland High School he never adjusted to the confusion that followed and had trouble with most classes. The notable exceptions were shop classes, and he took every shop class offered at the school.

After graduation he enrolled in technical courses at Salt Lake Community College, at which he excelled. He had decided that he wanted to be a precision machinist, and planned to take every available course in machining, programming for machines, metallurgy, welding, and related subjects. He had already completed two courses at night while working at Jimmy John's during the day. He was a model employee at Jimmy John's since his junior year in high school, and was promoted to Manager in his store.

Jacob met his girlfriend in middle school, and they continued their friendship through high school. After high school, their relationship deepened, and they were almost always together. Both loved the mountains in Utah and spent as much time camping as they could, consistent with their jobs and continuing education.

Unfortunately, Jacob developed depression in his early teenage years. He was treated extensively for this through every available avenue but never completely overcame it. When he was depressed he was overwhelmed with feelings of self-doubt and worthlessness.

On the day before his death he fell into one of those episodes, and at approximately 2:00 AM Tuesday morning he lost the final battle. His death is an unspeakable tragedy for all who knew him, especially because he was doing so well and appeared to have outgrown the depression. On the day of his death he had an interview for his dream job as a beginning machinist. We are consoled by knowing that Jacob is now at eternal peace in Heaven where he knows no more pain.

Jacob was always exceptionally generous, and we are consoled also by knowing that he made one last gift. Shortly after his death we were notified that a recipient was in immediate need of heart valves and that Jacob was a match, so his heart may now be bringing life to another.

Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 22 at 11:00 AM at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, with a Mass of Christian Burial, followed by burial at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery. All are welcome and warmly invited. Services will begin with a reception in the church foyer at 10:30 AM followed by Mass at 11:00 AM, and burial immediately after. St. Ambrose is located at 2315 E. Redondo Avenue, Salt Lake City, UT 84108, and the cemetery is at 275 North "U" Street (1252 East) in Salt Lake City.

Flowers may be sent to Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East in Salt Lake City, UT 84106.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Humane Society of Utah in memory of Jacob's love of dogs, at 4242 South 300 West, Murray, Utah 84107.

My heart is breaking
again for Jacob's
family and friends.
I have also lost a son
to suicide.
Time doesn't heal,

I am heartbroken to hear of Jacob´s death. He was intelligent, curious and driven. We spent a lot of time together in my office at Hillside along with his grandparents who loved him and were constantly looking for ways to help and support him. He would have been great as a machinist or engineer creating ways to fix things with his hands and intellect.
Jacob loved his dog who provided him with peace and unconditional love and attention. My heart goes out to his family. God bless you with the knowledge he is at peace and you did an amazing job raising Jacob.

I worked with Jacob a lot at Hillside. I really am having a hard time with this. He was such a bright person and truly cared about things deeply. I met his grandparents and they were amazing supporting this young man. He did struggle without structure, but tried so hard. I am so sorry for your loss and sorry he didn't get live a longer life and achieve his dreams. He deserved to do both of those things. He will be missed! I hope his family and friends find peace.

I only knew Jacob for two years via work, but within that short time frame Jacob had nothing but positive impacts on my life. I never knew he struggled so deeply and it pains me to know he held on for so long with such deep sadness in his heart. Jacob was a ray of hope to those who knew him, I looked forward to seeing him each shift knowing he would always have something to tell me or show me. When Jacob was around there was never a gloomy moment to be had. He was constantly looking out for those around him, making sure nobody was being mistreated; a true champion of peace. It´s with a heavy heart that I have to say goodbye to Jacob, but I know he still resides with all of us, deep within our hearts and our memories. I love and miss you dear friend. I know that you´re in a better place now.

Like others who have commented, I lost a son at 28 due to what I call "slow suicide" by a drug overdose. I admire Jacob´s family for sharing his wonderful spirit and his terrible struggles. I made a commitment to share my Michael´s story hoping that it will help another family know they are not alone. Your family has made that same commitment which, I know, will help other families who have children with neuro biochemical disorders as I like to think of depression and other related disorders. It is an extremely difficult road to follow, but at least we know their struggles are over and they are at peace. That is what comforts me. My heart goes out to Jacob´s family and friends for your loss.

I didn't know Jacob, but what a beautiful child. He seemed to be on the right track in life, but you never know when someone is struggling. From his obituary you can definitely tell he was loved and adored and it seemed he was succeeding to get where he wanted to be in life.

I am so very sorry for your loss.

My prayers will be with his family and friends during the days ahead.

I´ve never read such an honest, raw and insightful obituary as this one. Whoever wrote this heartfelt journey has helped more people than they´ll ever know. I didn´t know Jacob, but I feel he offered the world so much. He is at peace on his own terms. I can´t begin to imagine how painful this must be - but know this obituary was a wonderful tribute to him.

After walking a similar path, my heart goes out to you and everyone who loved Jacob. I hope you can find peace. Every time I would think of my son, I would imagine sending him peace and love in waves. Like gently brushing water away from me in a swimming pool. It helped me ward off my feelings of panic and regret by sending positivity out to him. Prayers and blessings to you.

What a beautiful young man. I too lost a son many years ago to suicide. I wish you peace knowing he is now free of the burdens of this world and on to glory in the next.

I do not know you, nor Jacob. I´ve never left a message for someone I didn´t know, nor do I frequent the Obituary page. His obituary caught my eye- and my heart breaks for you. It certainly seems as though you did everything you could. I think sharing his true story, along with his many talents and generosities, and by being open, not only demonstrates your love for Jacob and honoring all of him, but it goes a long way to helping others. I´m so terribly sorry for you, and Jacob, and all those who love him. May he rest in peace.
