Jay Hansen Obituary

1925 ~ 2016
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away August 24, 2016. Jay, the oldest of six children, was born in Logan, Utah on April 21, 1925 to Neils Hyrum Hansen and Angeline Welker Hansen. At the age of 5 he and his family moved to Holladay, Utah. In 1943 Jay graduated from Granite High School and immediately enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he was assigned to a B-17 flight-test crew. After WWII he served an LDS mission in the Southern States Mission. As a missionary he traveled to Cuba to report on factors that would affect missionary activity there. On November 5, 1948 Jay married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Jean Williams. Together they had four children: Karen, David, Stephen and Jon. Jay was a devoted partner to his sweetheart, and a loving and generous father. He embraced his role as grandfather with joy and enthusiasm and treasured each great-grandchild. A real estate broker and developer by profession, Jay spent an equal amount of time trying to improve his community and the lives of the young men around him. From 1953 to 1965 Jay and his father were home builders, building 790 homes throughout the Salt Lake Valley and he served as president of the Home Builders Association in 1963. He continued as a real estate broker until he retired at the age of 90. A legendary Boy Scout leader, Jay served as Scout Master of Troop 391 for 18 years followed by 14 years as leader of the 11 year olds. Jay kept his scouts very active by building towers & teepees in his back yard, monthly camping trips plus an annual "adventure camping trip" as well as many other activities. During his scouting career he received several awards and recognition including the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver. Through scouting Jay was a positive influence on the lives of countless young men. He had an unwavering testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and cherished his membership in the LDS Church giving a lifetime of service in many capacities.
Jay is survived by his wife Peggy; children Karen (Dan), David, Jon (Barb); grandchildren Dagny (David), Andra (Peter), Jono (Rebekah); great grandchildren Samuel, Megan, Cora and Maxwell. He is preceded in death by his son Stephen.

It is odd to read an obituary and find family, but that is what just happened here. My great grandfather and Angeline Welkers father were brothers from Jacob Stoker and Harriett Angeline Welker. I lived within a few miles of your parents for many years in Sandy. It is said we miss these oppurtunities until someone passes. My mother who was 2 years older than your Dad would have been elated to find family, but she passed in 2012. I now live in St George since I lost my husband in 2014. My email address is [email protected]. So sorry about your fathers passing, but know he is much happier where he is.

My Prayers and Thoughts are with your family at this time. Jay became a Scout Master the same year I joined his Troop. I will never forgot the things I learned from him and I will always remember the fun times we had. He was an incredible leader and a great example to all those boys who he influenced. One of the exciting things we did every year was to build the Lodge pole towers in his back yard. A great man who will be missed by many.

I'm sorry to hear of the passing away of Jay. He was a great man, and was a great influence in my life in my early days of scouting. He helped me obtain my Eagle Scout. I will always remember the countless hours and interest that he had in each of the scouts in his troop. I remember many scouting camp outs with him and the other leaders.

I'm really sorry that I will not be able to attend as I will be out of town.

My thoughts will be with Peggy and his children during this time of loss.

Jay and Peggy introduced me to the wonders of the Grand Tetons when we went camping there in 1984. I haven't missed a year then ever since. Jay was a wonderful example to me. I loved him very much.
