Michael Styles Obituary

Michael Styles
1961 ~ 2019
Michael Shadrach Styles came into this world December 23rd, 1961 and on March 2nd, 2019, he moved onto his next journey. His parents, Nellie and Nelson Styles instilled the values and work ethic in Michael that led to great personal achievement. He was a Political Science graduate from the University of Utah, worked tirelessly to earn his Master of Public Administration degree from Golden Gate University and as he loved to say, was also a graduate from the School of Hard Knocks. All the while, he sought roles in Non-Profits and Government to help advocate for People of Color, protect aging Utahns, and better his community in any way that he could.
His passions included music, playing guitar, the Raiders, boxing, MMA, fishing, hunting, piloting, teaching his political science class at SLCC and his show, "Spot on with Michael Styles". Most of all he loved spending time with his kids and grandchildren and found no more happiness than seeing them grow. He is with us no longer but will never be forgotten. His electric personality will never fade from our memories and his unceasing encouragement will continue to push us to be better every day. The love that he showed us will continue to strengthen our family as we strive to honor his memory and continue his legacy. Preceded in death by his Father Nelson and Mother Nellie Styles, Michael leaves behind three children, Michivon Holland, Crosby (Erica) Styles and Mica Styles. Five grandchildren Tamyah, Robert, Tamlyn, Naliyah and Cruz. His brother Steven (Kim) Styles and the mother of his children Lorri Kara. A viewing will be held March 8th, 2019 from 6-8 PM and the ceremony to celebrate his life will take place Saturday March 9th, 2019 at 11:00AM. Services will take place at Larkin Mortuary 1950 East Dimple Dell Rd (10600 South). In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the family's fund to help pay for funeral expenses. We have set up an account at America First Credit Union (account # 9108150) and will be more than grateful to those able to assist.

Today I learned that our bandmate, Michael Styles passed away in 2019. When a band breaks up and the players go in different directions we can loose contact with one another and news of our friend's passing sadly can be five years late. Michael Styles was a great performer, entertainer, guitar player and singer that anyone would want in their band. I feel very fortunate to have worked with Michael and had him as a friend. RIP Michael. Heaven has gained a rare talent and a great man.

Mr. Styles was one of the best teachers I have ever had the privilege of being a student. The impact he made upon my life fundamentally changed me. Mr. Styles taught me to view the world through a lens of nuance, balance, and the intricate complexities that everything is subject to. One of my favorite lessons he taught was "If you can not argue the side of your opposition, then you have no right talking about the subject." and the way he employed this method was a testament to how great of a professor he was. On the first week of class, he took advantage of our youthful bravado to figure out where all of us stood on the mainstream political issues of the time. After each of us gave our youthfully ignorant and naive take on how we knew what was best for the world, he had a list compiled for the whole entire class. Which he then made us debate, write papers, and complete projects supporting the causes on the other side of the spectrum. This was just one of the many unique and engaging ways Mr. Styles conducted his unique teaching method. I always came to class with excitement and anticipation for the interesting and charismatic way Mr. Styles conducted himself and interacted with us.

Being willing to openly view subjects, situations, experiences, and the struggles of life from outside my own perspective has been an invaluable practice as I make my way in this world. I will never forget all the lessons and tools Mr. Styles shared with me, for they have been continued to prove to be timeless and priceless.

I am very sorry to hear of Michael's death. I did not know him well. He gave me a few boxing lessons at work, and I was looking forward to more. He was clearly a good human being. May God bless Michael where he is now and his family members who remain here.

I am so saddened to hear of Michaels passing. Also shocked. Michael was always smiling. Every time I saw him or talked to him on the phone, he was happy. We just talked a couple of weeks ago about your dad and I didn't get a hard copy of the beautiful photo I finally found of him at La Caille to you in time. Just a text version of it. Far too soon my dear friend. Godspeed Michael. I will miss you dearly. My sincere condolences to his family.

My deepest condolences to Michael's family with your loss of this amazing man. I met Michael in the '80s when I saw him play guitar and we became great friends. I later found out that my grandparents knew his father well. We had great conversations about how we wanted to make positive impact in the community and I briefly served on a nonprofit he started. We hadn't spoken frequently in recent years, but I saw ran into him at the state office building a couple times. He always shared stories about his kids and his love for them. It broke my heart to hear of his passing. He made an a lasting imact on many people, including myself and I will never forget him. He was a true original.

Mike was one of the more memorable students I had during my English teaching days at Olympus High. He seemed to ooze enthusiasm every single day. We bumped into each other at Home Depot a few times over the last year or two, and he still had that contagious smile, that quick laugh, and that ability to engage.
Rest in peace, buddy. You were one of a kind.

Michael was one of the most high-spirited individuals we have worked with. He was a great support to the many wellness events in the MASOB. He will surely be missed by the Wellness Council and at his boxing training classes for the Fitness Council. The Wellness and Fitness Councils wish to give our deepest condolences to his family.

I first met Mike when we were on the same 5th grade little league football team, and Lamar Lewis was our coach. We won games for one reason and that was because we gave the ball to Mike. He was an amazing athlete. But more than his athletic ability, he had an ability to simply connect with everyone. I cannot imagine what it was like for Mike to grow up in Utah - - but if there was ever a person who embraced everything that came his way, that was Mike. I remember Mike's parents very well; they were the epitome of class, dignity, humility, and love; and Mike was everything that a parent could desire in the life of a son. Our paths crossed over the years and it was always a great day when I would go home and tell my wife that I ran into Mike Styles today, he is such good guy. My life has been impacted for the better and for good, because Michael Shadrach Styles came into the world. Until now, I did not know Mike's middle name - I am sure that he is having one helluva time catching up withe Meshach and Abednego. Love and Peace to dear brother and friend. Tom Walk

Michael was a rare critical thinker and never shied away from expressing his independent point of view. His thoughts crossed political lines and gave me hope that I am not alone in looking for a positive way forward. He was in a position to influence many people so I am hopeful there are others who learned from him to carry his message of friendship and understanding forward.
