Stephen Cannon Obituary

Stephen B. Cannon
1951 - 2014
Stephen Bowman Cannon passed away peacefully in his home on December 8, 2014 in the presence of loving family members. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on September 9, 1951 to Howell Q. and Ruth Bowman Cannon.
Stephen was a wonderfully sensitive, generous and gentle soul with a great sense of humor and an easy laugh. For most of his life he loved to talk to people and readily made friends because of his willingness to listen to them and serve their needs. He received his bachelor's degree in Anthropology from the University of Utah and became an employment counselor for the Utah Department of Workforce Services until illness forced his retirement.
His interests were many and varied. He was a licensed pilot, a skydiver, an avid collector of classical music recordings and a talented craftsman, having constructed a full-sized working harpsichord that, along with a prized book collection, took up much of the space in his bedroom. He loved to learn and would focus his attention and curiosity on a new skill to be mastered or a new field to be studied until he could comfortably converse with experts about their respective fields of endeavor.
He enjoyed hiking and exploring the trails of Utah and the western United States, taking great interest in wildlife and the flowers and trees that make the world beautiful. His own contributions, observations and innate goodness added to that beauty.
He served an honorable full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Texas San Antonio Mission and was an eager and knowledgeable participant in discussions on points of doctrine and history with family members and friends.
He endured multiple surgeries and painful recuperation periods that eventually took a toll on him and limited his activity in recent years.
Stephen is survived by his mother, Ruth; and his sisters, Connie (Don) Duncombe, Ruth (Michael) Stevens and Mary (Ralph) Dewsnup; as well as his brother, Mark (Stephanie) Cannon; and by many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews whom he loved and who loved him. He was preceded in death by his father, Howell; and by his sister, Janet (David) Dunford.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at the Stratford Ward located at 2605 South 1500 East, Salt Lake City, Utah, beginning at 11:00 a.m. Friends may visit the family from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.

Stephen was my special friend over the many years we worked together in the late 70's. At Deseret Book. My heart is broken that the world has lost such a wonderful kind man! I have never forgotten you and the impact you had on my life. I often had mention you to my kids how much I loved you and of all past friends you were one I missed not having in my life! You were one of a kind, never found someone even close to your gentle, generous, love. Every year for over 30 years I would wish you Happy Birthday out loud on Sept 9th,hoping you would feel the love. I will never stop, because one day we will meet again my friend. I look forward to embrace you once again. My deepest sympathy to his family.for your loss.

Jerry Pace sends her condolences for you at this time. She remembers your wonderful family from the days on Dearborn Ave. She lives in Mission Viejo California and is still going strong. She'll be 90 in Feb. Dad passed away in 2010. She read the obituary and wanted me to write this message. She still drives and travels extensively. To mother Ruth she knows you have a strong testimony and knows in time you'll be reunited with your loved ones. With love...from Jerry Pace.
