Aurelio Díaz
Dr. Aurelio Díaz died Friday, October 7, 2011 at his home in San Antonio surrounded by his loving family. He was 83 years old. Born in Del Rio, Texas on September 19, 1928, Aurelio spent most of his life in San Antonio as an OB/GYN, delivering over 7000 babies. As a boy, he grew up working in his father's grocery store. After graduating valedictorian from San Felipe High School in Del Rio, at the age of 16 he enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin. He then attended medical school at UTMB-Galveston followed by residency at the Robert B. Green Hospital in San Antonio and Endocrinology/Infertility fellowships at New York University, University of Stockholm, Sweden, University of British Columbia-Vancouver and Duke University. He served as Captain in the US Army stationed in Bussac, France where he was Chief of OB/GYN. In San Antonio, he was Lecturer and Instructor at the Baptist School of Nursing, a Charter Member and Secretary of Medical Staff at the UT Health Science Center and President of the Medical Executive Board of the Baptist Memorial Hospital System. Aurelio is survived by his wife of 44 years, Carmen Diego Díaz, their children: Claudia Díaz, Aurelio Díaz IV and wife, Shannon Albright Díaz, Clarissa Díaz Brothers and husband, Patrick Brothers; his grandchildren Lucas Aurelio, Cristián Diego, Camila Sofia, Thomas Aurelio, Risa Ann, and by his brother, Carlos "Chale" Díaz. Aurelio was preceded in death by his father, Aurelio Díaz and mother, Concepción Risa Díaz, his sister, Olga Garza and his twin brother, Ignacio. Aurelio was a lifelong Texas Longhorn and a distinguished alumnus of the San Felipe High School in Del Rio, Texas where his beloved hometown honored him with the key to the city. He was known and will always be remembered as a loving family man and compassionate physician. Tan, Papi. There will be a Rosary on Thurs Oct 13 at 7 pm and a funeral Mass on Fri Oct 14 at 10 am. Both will be at St. Luke's Catholic Church. Charitable donations in his name can be made to St. Luke's Catholic, 4603 Manitou Dr. San Antonio, TX 78228.

Dr. Diaz was my doctor beginning in 1991. He was a kind, and gentle man who spoke softly and made you feel like you knew him for years. Im so glad to have met him and think of him as a role model. God bless and comfort his beautiful family.

Years later I think of Dr. Diaz. I worked as an RN at the Baptist OR and was one of his patients. He treated everyone like his family. My sister-in-law was treated by him for fertility problems as well. He was a caring person. His son was an intern at Galveston when he helped refer her for cancer treatment there. He offered his son´s phone number if she needed any help. All these years later as a retired NP my husband and I still treasure the memories of such an eloquent and fine MD. Really a fine person! Always an inspiration and an encouraging person. May God Bless all his family! You have a fine heritage. 2022

Dr.Diaz was the rarest of rare individuals. From our first visit to him I, my daughter and my sister saw him as the standard against which every prior & later healthcare professionals were measured, and they are still. God Bless all of you fortunate enough to have had him in your lives.

I was fortunate to be treated by Dr. Diaz almost 40 yrs ago for infertility. Thanks to his knowledge, I got to be a mom to a son and daughter, both of whom he delivered. He was a compassionate doctor and a sweet man. Thanks to God for sharing Dr. Diaz with his family, his patients and friends. It's a better world because of the presence of Dr. Diaz. I will remember him with gratitude and fondness forever. My sincere condelences to his family.

My condolences to the family of Dr. Diaz. He delivered my son in 1973 and was my doctor up until his retirement. He was a wonderful person as well as a wonderful doctor. He made all of his patients feel special. My thoughts and prayers are with his family

My condolences to the family of Dr. Aurelio Diaz.
I knew him well. He was a great friend of my father--Jose L. Zapata--from Del Rio. I remember him at our San Fe class reunion one year when he was the grand marshall of our parade. Imagine him taking the time to come!

I had the priviledge of working with Dr. Aurelio Diaz at the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District. He was such a gentle and loving person. My condolences to his family.

I have lived in Houston, Texas since 1984, before that lived in San Antonio. In 1972 Dr. Diaz did surgery on me that involved my bladder, which at the time was very serious. I recovered very well thanks to Dr. Dias. I just feel so bad that I never kept in touch to let him know how well of a job he did. However, I will ask God to do me the favor and tell him since I know he is right there by his side. Rest in peace Dr. Diaz.

Our most sincere and deepest sympathy to the Diaz family. He was such a compassionate doctor. I was his patient in 1965(M&S Tower office) and he delivered my first baby in April 1966. The last one in Oct 1980. It was an honor to have him as my doctor.

A kind-hearted, loving man and phyisician. A classmate/roomate of my uncle, Dr. Calderon. I once called Dr. Diaz that my dad was having by-pass surgery and the next day he was there offering his love and support. A great loss to the medical community, SA, his beloved Del Rio, and the barrio. Con mucho amor siempre.

Aurelio became one of my role models when he did a preceptorship in Laredo when he was a medical student at UTMB. He was such a kind gentle person both professionally and personally. I will really miss him.

Our deepest condolences to the Diaz family, may the Lord comfort you during this very difficult time. Dr. Diaz was my mother's (Rafaela A. Luna, frm Del Rio) & my (Almeida Sustaita) Dr. He treated me for infertility, as a result of his proper treatment I have a 23yr old son (Pas John Sustaita), "el milagrito". I was remembering Dr. Diaz the other day and yes God has taken the best. He was always very caring, patient, and truly a professional in his field. Del Rio was very proud of him. I am originally from Del Rio and moved to Eagle Pass. I was his patient for several years and thanks to God and Dr. Diaz I haad my 1st child. My prayers go to his wife Carmela and all of his family.

I just saw this in the paper today. My love and prayers to the family. He delivered both my children in the 70's. He was a wonderful,caring and precious man as well as a great Doctor. I considered him a friend not only a Doctor-he was compassionate and you could call him for anything-he was always there for you. God Bless and Rest in Peace Dr Diaz.

I am not one anyone would remember but I remember your courdial ways to the ladies having their babies and how you were so patient and caring. May God receive you in his everlasting glory. May Dr. Diaz rest in peace, I knew him from the Baptist hospital when I was a registered nurse in the E.R. and a house supervisor. He was always compassionate with patients and was not your typical arrogant physician. He always had a kind word and a smile for everyone. He was a true professional.
