Harlan Beach Obituary
Harlan Page Beach was born on August 12, 1925 in Leninakan, Armenia, where his parents were missionaries with the Near East Foundation. His father, Rev. Joseph Wickliff Beach and his mother, Blanche Easton Beach returned with their family to the United States when Mr. Beach was nine years old. Harlan, his brother and two sisters grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts. He served in the Army's 86th Infantry Division (The Blackhawks) during World War II. He is a graduate of Yale University and Andover Newton Theological Seminary. He first served as pastor for churches in central Vermont and subsequently as the director of the Inner-City Parish of Denver, Colorado. After moving to San Antonio, Texas, he obtained a Master's degree from Trinity University in Healthcare Administration, which he followed by services in several non-profit organizations. He then taught accounting at a technical school in San Antonio. After developing a love for the sport of tennis, he competed a tennis instruction program and taught tennis to many students in the San Antonio area.
Mr. Beach is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Alice Beach, his brother, David Beach, and nephews, Jonathan Beach and Erik Vigmostad. He is survived by his son, John (Tuck) Beach and wife Paige; his former wife, Cornelia Beach; grandchildren Caroline and Hudson Beach; sister, Dorothea Chichester and husband Dick, and sister-in-law Lisa Beach; his nieces Elisabeth Wade and her husband Jeff, and Sally Herried and her husband Matt, and nephew Tom Beach and his partner Jeff Masek.
Mr. Beach was skilled in photography, woodworking, guitar, and tennis, among other things. He is remembered for his bright smile, his constant (and sometimes corny) sense of humor, and his friendly nature. Harlan never met a stranger. Almost to the very end, he was regularly joking with and playing with the staff at his nursing home in Boerne, Texas. He loved seeing and hearing about his grandchildren, whom he was always so proud of. He will be greatly missed.
