James De La Zerda Obituary

October 9, 1927 - May 25, 2018
James E. De La Zerda Sr. passed away at age 90 on Friday, May 25, 2018. Born in Floresville, TX, the youngest of six, James started his childhood living in the country. While attending Floresville High School he joined the track team and earned the nickname, "The 10 sec Man" for his pace in the 100-yard dash. James then served his country by joining the US Army during World War II at age of eighteen. After returning home, he began his career of 30 years in Civil Service at Kelly Air Base. James valued his family, friends, and his faith in God. He loved to tell jokes and share stories of his past. James also enjoyed entertaining with his guitar and singing one of his favorite romantic tunes. We will deeply miss his humor, charismatic personality, and the big smile on his face whenever he was surrounded by family and loved ones. He is preceded in death by the love of his life, married for 60 years to Hilda P. De La Zerda; parents; and siblings. He is survived by his children, Blanca Garcia and husband, Dr. Paul D. Garcia, James E. De La Zerda, Jr and wife, Irene De La Zerda. One loving grandson, Paul James Garcia; sister, Margaret Hawkins; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to express many thanks to the Sisters and Staff at St. Francis Nursing Home for there around the clock care. Also, the De La Zerda Family would like to thank Dr. Paul Garcia and Dr. Tan for the wonderful care and love towards his Father in law over the years. Visitation will be on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 6:00 P.M. at Porter Loring on McCullough.

Blanca and James,
I am very late hearing about your Father, I'm sure he left you with a ton of great memories to keep you smiling. I met your father while he was walking on Academy. I was suprised to me to find out that he and my father were cousins. It was great to hear him speak of when they were youths and a few of the dances they attended together.

My husband and I met "cowboy" in church. He was a gentleman and very kind with a very firm handshake and a great smile. He will be missed by many people and I will always miss his kind words.

My prayers and condolences to all the family. I do remember him sitting in his chair with his guitar along with smile. Although most of the time he wasn't very pleased with our antics but always a gentleman. Joined again with your beautiful mom.

Jimmy : I am very sorry for the passing of your Dad. I have fond memories of both your Parents. I seem to remember his Mercury 4 door and how he kept it immaculately clean. You and your family are in our prayers.

Blanca & Jimmy,

Uncle Jimmy made our lives complete. He was funny, loving and kind hearted. I know he is where he wanted to be...right next to his Sugar. One day we will all be reunited with him in God's Kingdom!

Blanca & Jimmy,
Your father was a Texas/De La Zerda Gentleman that I loved! He was always kind to me and the love he displayed for your Mom was the example I follow to this day! He and your Mom are together again in Heaven and one day, we will see them again!
