ONOFRE SERNA Obituary

ONOFRE SERNA, JR. 60 passed peacefully on January 21, 2021 at Baptist hospital in San Antonio, TX.

He was born on June 21, 1960 to Onofre, Sr. and Eloisa Contreras Serna in Laredo, TX. There he attended Hebbronville High School and continued his Law Enforcement education at the San Antonio Police Academy graduating in 1985.

Officer Serna served proudly with the Jim Hogg Sheriff's Office, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office and finally with the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) where he spent the next thirty-five years from January 15, 1985 to January 21, 2021. He was also awarded the Purple Heart and Life Saving Medals.

His early years on the force began with patrolling various areas of San Antonio to include downtown Foot Patrol and the Bike Patrol section. Officer Onofre Serna, Jr loved protecting the streets of downtown San Antonio as well as serving as an off-duty officer at the Riverwalk Mall. The incredible friendships formed with merchants and trust that the people felt was rewarding. His dedication to his duty was highly recognized by his peers and people who came into his life. A father figure, jokester, brother, cousin, friend, and loving husband were the hallmarks that encompass his life.

He was a Martial Arts Instructor who taught at the West Side YMCA. He was a member of the American Fighting Arts Association whereby his participation awarded him a Master Certificate of Instruction.

He is survived by his Loving wife, Tysralynn Leilehua Kupahu Serna; Father, Onofre Serna, Sr.; Brothers and their spouses, Rumaldo (Cynthia) Serna, Servando (Sandra) Serna, Ignacio Serna (Marisa Perez); Sister, Maria Isabel Serna; Aunt, Sylvia Ballesteros; Nephews/Nieces: Frances Cuellar, Jennifer Ramirez, Ramiro Serna, Kassandra Serna, Julian Serna, and Alexis De Leon.

Officer Serena was a brave first responder always prepared to spring into action. His dedication to public service was beyond reproach. He was also known downtown and was well respected amongst all who knew him. Thank you for helping me with that personal matter. I will never forget how you didn't hesitate to help me. I would always pass through the mall where I know I would see you and so we could talk a bit. Godspeed Serna. You're a good man who I considered a friend.

I met Officer Serna many years ago at Baptist Medical Center when I was a brand new nurse. He always made a point to stop and chat for a while whenever he had to come up to our ICU, and I always enjoyed seeing him and catching up. He always made me laugh and gave me a hard time about something. It breaks my heart that he passed here with us, but I hope he knows he was surrounded by friends. I want to say to his wife, I never met you but he spoke so dearly of you and I know how much he was looking forward to his retirement and spending time together. I send you all my love and condolences and I wish he was still here with you to enjoy the future. You will be in my prayers always.

Officer Serna is known to me from the work he did in and around my hospital. Having served with SAPD for so many years and remaining one of the Nicest People I have ever met, speaks volumes to his character.
When I saw him last, he was walking towards me in a jovial conversation with my staff. Thats how I will always remember you Sir. You Will Be Missed...

I've known Serna for many years. First met him at the old PD headquarters working dogwatch. He worked downtown District 2120 for years. What a character. The last time I saw him I asked when he was going to retire. He said "retire, he was having too much fun". That was him. Always kidding around but one heck of an officer when he had to be. RIP Serna. We will all miss you.

I did not know him. I have worked with Rumaldo and Cindy Serna for many years.
They and their immediate family are dedicated to our Catholic Faith, therefore I know they are in good
hands. They are sad now but will always have great memories of Rumaldo's brother. I will pray for his soul
and the living relatives that their pain will soon be replaced with fond memories and that they will all be closer
as a family.

Serna was truly a special person. I knew him as a nurse in downtown San Antonio. If Serna showed up, there’d be no problems. He has such a presence, people responded without him even saying a word. Highly respected. It breaks my heart to hear of his passing, I wish I had seen him more recently. I will truly cherish all our talks over the years. My deepest condolences to his wife and family. Such a loss to SAPD. Will miss you Serna!

I knew Officer Serna very well! He served as a devoted member of the Security staff, working off-duty at the Shops at Rivercenter Mall and like many have stated, he loved helping others and just was a joy to be around and know. He always went out of his way to help those who needed and required his services and expertise. I will truly miss him and on behalf of the entire Security Department at The Shops at Rivercenter, we thank Officer Serna for a "job well done"! Thank you to his devoted wife and family for sharing him with us! He will be truly missed! Thank you and God Bless!

My deepest condolences go out to his many friends and family.
