Steven Gehrlein Obituary

GEHRLEIN
Steven F. Gehrlein, age 61, passed away May 9, 2011, in San Antonio. He was born September 28, 1949, in Brooklyn, NY to Walter and Frances Gehrlein. He moved to San Antonio as a child and graduated from Edison High School. He received a BA from St. Mary's University while serving as a patrol officer for SAPD. After he left the force, he worked as a railroad engineer with Missouri Pacific Railroad. Steve was always working with his hands and loved working on cars. He started his own auto repair shop - Cambridge Auto Center. Through the auto shop he met radio personality Ricci Ware who was so impressed by Steve's auto knowledge that he talked him into an on air auto radio show called "The Automotive Show" that began in 1984 on KTSA and is still popular today. Steve was a proud member of the Texas Automotive Writers Association. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Frances. He is survived by his loving wife, Anne; daughter, Kristy Allen and husband Dewayne; son, Steven Ryan Gehrlein and Amy Green; daughter, Kira Willingham and husband Sean; three grandchildren, MaryAlice, Lola and Jake; one grandchild on the way; brother, Walter Gehrlein and wife Janice; and best friend, business partner and previous wife of 28 years, Judy Lenard.

I miss Steve every Saturday that I was home from work. His savvy about any vehicle was incredible. I am glad his shop is still operating as it was the best in San Antonio in my opinion. Rest in peace brother.

Late in the day of May 4th '21,a man whom I called earlier called me back. He owned an outboard motor repair shop in Granite Shoals TX . We discussed my outboard problem and he made several suggestions and then eagerly answered other questions I had about related subjects. He was so animated and generous with information he reminded me of Steve. But what was so unusual is that you'll hardly ever get a call back from a mechanic of any kind. We spoke 55 minutes and during that time I told him he ought to have a morning talk show about boats and motors , like Steve did. He didn't know who Steve was but I said Steve never acted condescendingly to anyone, there was never a stupid question to him. And I especially liked when he'd bring his pastor on for a few moments and tell people if they didn't know Jesus they didn't know what they were missing.

I listened every week and loved it. Called him several times and his advice was spot on. Ive since moved to NW Ohio and even the weekend auto show out of Detroit cant compare. Think of him and Cambridge Auto often.

On the radio he was nice to his callers, never abrupt, or condescending, treating people like he would want to be treated. No questions were treated as inane or trite. When I found out he was a Christian I said aha, that explains it!. He was a fine example of how a Christian should act. I wouldve loved to have known him personally

Ann, I feel like Steve has helped me from the other side. Actually it was probably the many years that I listened to him on KTSA. Anyway "Crank Angle Positioning Sensor" shot into my head today when everything said it was the Fuel Pump in the Tank and it fixed it. Thank you Steve, we miss you.

I still can't believe steve gehrlein passed away. He was
Such an incredible man and so
witty and smart. Grief is so hard. I loved him so much.

November 7, 2011

This guy was so nice and respectful to all his callers. I thought, " Why is he that way?" Then it added up when he had his pastor on the show and he said on the radio, "Folks, you don't know what you're missing if you don't know your Savior, Jesus Christ" He's a Christian. That explains it. Your pal, Ray

i only worked with steve for a little over a year, but on those early weekend mornings when most of the rest of san antonio was just barely rolling out of bed, steve had a great and boistorius energy that kept you on your toes!

June 3, 2011

May God Bless and rest my good friend Steve. Many great stories come to mind after working with him for the past 16 years. Steve never at a loss for words or worldly advise whether you wanted to hear it or not, never at a loss to lend a helping hand or a shoulder to lean on. Steve would never to tell you "no" he would make it happen somehow. Steve was like being a friend to the President, he was in the know and knew the knowers:) Steve impacted and changed the life of his beautiful wife Anne forever. God called Steve to be her husband before he left to heaven, for a reason. Steve instilled love, courage, forgiveness, hope, strength and independence, then temporarily left Mrs Anne G. to finish the ground work which they had layed, learned, and loved together. Until one day soon we all meet again, singing praises and glorifying our Almighty Father, hand in hand, together forever.

Steve you are greatly missed by the many people . And loved
by those who never had a chance to meet you in person. Your
automotive tips and answers to our questions were always right. KTSA 550 has given a great man and true friend a "VOICE" that will live on in our hearts. Steve loves trains as
much as cars. if you hear a "TRAIN" say Hi! If there are trains in heaven he is "The Chief Engineer". God Bless Steve.

I always read bedtime stories to my grandchild every night, except for tonight. He asked me to just tell him a story. So with a tear I told him the story of Steve and what a wonderful person he was in sharing his knowledge about cars to so many of us.. I emphasized we should all be willing to share and help other people in need. And I so admired Steve for taking time away from his family and giving us his gift of knowledge, wit, and charm. My most heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends and staff.

I didn't know Steve personally all that well...but I surely wanted to get to know him better. I own a propane vehicle conversion business and Steve and I shared thoughts on several occasions about how to save the "average guy" a little money using hydrogen, propane or whatever it took to help the average person. Just those few conversations we had showed me his true honest character. I am so deeply saddened. But there is consolation in the great numbers of people he helped every day. And most assuredly every weekend. God bless you Steve. And my heartfelt prayers for his family.

May 13, 2011

My family learned, with great sorrow, of the loss of Steve Gehrlein.

We started listening to his informative & entertaining radio show in the late 1990's. Impressed by his knowledge & down-to-earth manner, my husband, who is a seasoned aircraft & automoive mechanic, approched Steve at a home show some years ago with a perplexing problem regarding his van. Steve was gracious about having a lengthly discussion about the problem & coming up with a probable cause & do-it-yourself fix. By the way, he was right!

Not mechanically inclined myself, I enjoyed Steve's interest in his callers, his love of his work, his clear concise advice, & his willingness to admit it when he wasn't sure about something. But, above all, I loved his wit & warmth; he treated everybody in a friendly way & with sincere respect.

Our deepest sympathy the his fiends & beloved family. Thank you for sharing him. He will be sorely missed.

Even for those who never knew Steve personally, so many of us felt as though we did. Even though I knew nothing about auto mechanics, I would always listen to Steve's show on Saturday mornings on my car radio while running errands. Even for those not mechanically inclined, listeners could always count on being entertained by the amusing banter on Steve’s show. No matter what car issue anyone had, it was amazing how he so instinctively knew what was wrong and the best way to fix the problem. It was also so refreshing that Steve was never ashamed to mention God's name or make reference to Christianity. He conveyed a true sense of integrity and patriotism which earned the respect of so many. He will definitely be missed.

Jeff Yip

May 12, 2011

My condolences to Steve's family.

He was joyous and passionate. I was fortunate to have seen Steve at Texas Motor Speedway just a few days ago at the Texas Auto Writers Association's "spring fling" in Fort Worth. As usual, he exuded vitality and good cheer. He was also a natural story teller -- whether it was how he found out a commercial property he had been interested in buying might be haunted, to how he had perplexed a certain automaker's engineers by being able to consistently out-drag their snazzy new vehicle with a competitor's -- at their own event! His friendship, integrity, hands-on knowledge and teaching will be missed by all.

I salute you, my friend.

May 12, 2011

May God comfort you in your loss and sorrow with ever sweetning memories. Many, many of us will miss Steve on his automotive radio program with straight forward advice in a non-promoting manner for his own business, and sincere offers for his automotive personnel to be available for follow up advice by visit or phone call without charge. Truly one of the good guys that always cut to the chase with humour and good will. My Saturdays and Sundays will be left with a void without being able to continue hear Steve after 20 some years of fairly regular attendence to his program. He will be missed by many.
God Bless

Steve was well-respected in the Texas motorsports community. He sponsored several different teams and was a regular fixture at San Antonio Speedway in Highway 16 South for many years. He was also a good friend of mine.

How saddened I am of this loss; my prayers go out to Steve's family. What a wonderful, giving person he was -- helping so many people. I was especially impressed how he reached out to single parents, knowing their limited incomes, that he was vocal about his faith in Jesus Christ, and allowing his pastor to speak words of encouragement to the listening audience from time to time.
