Edward Lyng Obituary

Rev. Msgr. Edward "Éamonn" Francis Lyng
January 28, 1935 - June 1, 2018
San Diego – Monsignor Éamonn Francis Lyng, a priest of almost sixty years, died Friday. He was 83 years old. The third of five children, Msgr. Lyng was born to Edward and Brigid (Hoyne) Lyng in Kilkenny, Ireland on January 28, 1935, and was ordained to the priesthood at St. Kieran College Seminary in Kilkenny, Ireland on June 8, 1958, for the Diocese of San Diego. From the green fields of Bennettsbridge in his native county Kilkenny to the shores of New York, and on to the Diocese of San Diego, the then "Father" Lyng began his zealous priestly ministry. That ministry covered the sprawling counties of the Diocese of San Diego where he served, built churches, expanded facilities, and contributed to the advancement of Catholic Education by opening the first Catholic school in the Diocese at Good Shepherd Parish after a 15-year moratorium, while supported by a group of dedicated lay people who deeply valued Catholic education. Monsignor's priestly ministry in administering the sacraments and preaching the message of the Gospel, while caring for the sick and needy, was the central theme of his ministry, which included the following assignments: Associate Pastor: St. Joseph, Upland (1958); Holy Spirit, San Diego (1961); St. Rose of Lima, Chula Vista (1962); Sacred Heart, Coronado (1964). Pastor: St Thomas Indian Mission, Fort Yuma (1968); St. Peter and St. Paul, Alta Loma (1970); Good Shepherd, San Diego (1977); and Mary, Star of the Sea, La Jolla (1993). He retired in 2008. After nineteen months in-residence at Mary, Star of the Sea and then St. Joseph Cathedral, San Diego, he moved to Nazareth House, San Diego where he lived until he died. In addition to his pastoral assignments, Msgr. Lyng served as Vicar Forane, was a member of the Board of Education Ministry, Clergy Personnel Board, and the College of Consulters. In 1985, he was honored to be named a Prelate of Honor (Monsignor) by Pope John Paul II. He was also an active member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. Monsignor Lyng is survived by his sister, Patricia Kearns (Michael, deceased), and a brother Desmond Lyng (Gemma), both of Dublin, Ireland. He was preceded in death by his brother Richard and sister-in-law Creina, and Paschal and sister-in-law Kathleen. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews in Ireland. Vigil for the Deceased: Thurs., June 7 at 7:00 pm, Our Mother of Confidence Church, 3131 Governor Dr., San Diego. Funeral Mass: Friday, June 8 at 10:00 am, Our Mother of Confidence Church. Rite of Committal: Holy Cross Cemetery later that same day. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Msgr Lyng had a profound impact on my life growing up and shaping my faith as a boy in the 90s, early 2000s. I was fortunate enough to reconnect with him a few times, visiting him at Nazareth house and taking to lunch a few years before he died. It saddened me deeply to just learn of his passing and I'm so glad I was able to reconnect with him later in my life. Msgr Lang, your gone, but not forgotten <3

I just heard of Father Eamonn Lyng's death from my Sister, Sister Mary Eamon Lyng SSJ. Our family enjoyed meeting Father at my Sisters 50th Anniversary in 2012. We certainly considered him our real connection to Kilkenny, Ireland and our family history.
