STEPHEN MICKLER Obituary

MICKLER, STEPHEN RANDALL Born May 21, 1953 Died December 20, 2009 Randy Mickler passed away peacefully December 20, 2009, at home in Chula Vista surrounded by his family. He was 56. Randy was born in Camp Atterbury, Indiana, but moved to St. Augustine, Florida, when he was two months old, where his family has lived since the 1700s. He graduated from Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville, FL, attended the University of Florida in Gainesville and graduated from the University of Central Florida in 1976. He worked for WJXT-TV in Jacksonville as a producer and director until 1980 when he moved to San Diego, where he was with NBC San Diego for 29 years. He was a member of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Silver Circle and received several Emmys for his creative work. He retired from the station as Director of Operations in June. Randy loved music and photography, played the guitar and everyone who knows him is aware of his love for karaoke and, above all, the Florida Gators. He fought a courageous five-year battle with colon cancer and he will be missed deeply by his family. He is survived by his wife, Jane Clifford, and his four children, Angela Sears, Shannon Fosgett, Ryan Mickler and Lauren Mickler, his parents Joe and Marilyn Mickler, brother Rick Mickler, five grand-children and seven nieces and nephews. He had many other family members and friends whom he cherished. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Wednesday, December 23rd, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Scripps Ranch. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider memorials to the University of Florida Shands Cancer Center or San Diego Hospice.

Dear Family, I am so sorry for your loss. Though I'm older, we would play together at family gatherings when we were little. Randy was such a sweet person. He has been in my prayers for a long time. I look forward to meeting you when you come to St. Augustine.

It almost goes without saying that Randy was cool dude, a good guy. The extremely large number of people at his service is evidence of that. There isn't enough space to express all the examples because they would reach from San Diego to "Gator Country". I hope the great moments your family shared together and all the memories he left will be a source of strength for Lauren, the kids, and the rest of the family. That's what he would want. Those memories and great times can't be taken away and will be treasured forever.
