Alfred Amaral Obituary

Alfred "Al" Amaral passed away August 21, 2018, at the age of 78 with his family by his side. Al was born in Newman, California, and was the oldest of four boys of Fred and Mary Amaral. He graduated from Gonzales High School in 1958, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1964 from the School of Agriculture Management. After graduation, Al took a position in the agriculture credit department at Wells Fargo bank in San Francisco and continued his education to receive his MBA from Golden Gate College. In 1967, he returned to Cal Poly to teach agriculture management, and then in 1971 he accepted a position as the Executive Director of the Cal Poly Foundation. Al spent the next 29 years providing leadership, vision and expertise to the Cal Poly Foundation until retiring in 2000; a job he loved. During Al's retirement, he kept very busy participating on numerous boards and committees, faithfully serving the communities of San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly. Al loved spending time with family and friends and cherished many wonderful years at Bass Lake enjoying quality family time and great chicken BBQs. He also really enjoyed his daily trip to the Elks Lodge, visiting with friends and solving the problems of the world. Al leaves behind his wife Rose, who was his best friend and the love of his life for 53 years; his children, Rosemarie Amaral and Fred Amaral; his brother, Robert Amaral; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Al is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mary Amaral; and his brothers, John Amaral Sr. and Gary Amaral. Al was an incredible man and irreplaceable. He was a great listener to many and his guidance will be deeply missed. Al will forever live in our hearts. Full Steam Ahead! A service will be held on Thursday, August 30, 2018, at the Old Mission San Luis Obispo, 751 Palm, (Rosary at 9:30 am and funeral Mass at 10:00 am) with interment at the Old Mission Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum, 101 Bridge St., and a Celebration of Life at the San Luis Obispo Elks Lodge, 222 Elks Lane, immediately following. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Al and Rose Amaral Agricultural Enterprise Program Endowment at the Cal Poly Foundation, 1 Grand Ave., San Luis Obispo, CA 93407-0443, or to the Community Counseling Center (CCC), 1129 Marsh St., San Luis Obispo, CA 93401, or a favorite charity.

Our deepest condolences to Rose and family - we were out of town right after hearing about Al's death. It seems like we knew Al for decades both at Cal Poly and in his active community service life. So soft spoken yet everyone listened because Al always had something relevant and important to say. He will be missed dearly - a Mr. Rogers for our neighborhood.

Dear Rose and family
I was saddened and shocked to learn of Al's passing. I loved his easy laugh and his serious commitment to competency and quality in running the Foundation. Even though he and I were not in touch much after I left Cal Poly, I took away an affection for him that will never change.
I kept the lapel button honoring his 50th birthday (Ask me who is 50 today) in my desk's middle drawer, and would inevitably see it each time I opened it. His face never failed to bring a smile to mine. It will remain there, to remind me of one of the finest persons I had the pleasure to work with during my years at Cal Poly.
Yesterday's mass and rosary were a fitting tribute to his life. I'm sorry I was not able to join you afterward.

Dear Rose and Family, I am out of the country and received news of Al's passing. I am saddened for all of you, and our community at large. He has a large circle of people who respect his quiet and thoughtful approach to issues. His sense of humor was subtle, but so funny. During a long past Presidential election year, and if we had a meeting, he would always stop at 7-11 to get coffee in a Bush cup just to give this long time Democrat a jab. He always displayed the utmost of respect towards everyone, I will miss him and am sorry I was not able to attend the Service today.
