Fred L. Nick

Fred L. Nick, 80, of Pozo, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at his ranch. He was born in August 1932 in San Luis Obispo to Jerome T. and Margaret M. Nick. He graduated from Atascadero High School and attended Cal Poly. He was a school board trustee for six years. Growing up he was active in 4-H and FFA. He worked on the family ranch and raised cattle and sold firewood, which was the start of both Nick''s Firewood and Nick Brangus. He went on to have high selling bulls in many elite sales and exhibited Grand and Reserve Champion Bull at Red Bluff Bull Sale. He also worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad, PG&E and Cal Farm Insurance. Recently, Fred began the business of raising and selling USDA inspected grass fed beef to the public. He was the first livestock producer to become Certified Organic in San Luis Obispo County. Fred is survived by his wife of 58 years, Donna I. Nick; children Juanell Hepburn (Dave), Norman Nick (Lorie) and Wayne Nick (Michelle); grandchildren Adell, Johnnie, Jessy, Brandon, Lacy, Gary, Morgan, Casey and Christy; and great-grandchildren Codi, Cameron, Chloe and Caden.
