Joseph Elwell Obituary

Joseph O. Elwell
April 13, 1944 - June 11, 2022
San Luis Obispo, California - Joseph Odell Elwell III, born April 13th, 1944 passed away at his home in San Luis Obispo on June 11th, 2022, aged 78, of natural causes. Joe will be sorely missed.
Joe was born in Denver, Colorado to Verna and Joseph Elwell II. He was a middle child, his sister Patricia being the eldest, and Scott the youngest. At a young age, Joe moved to the Santa Ynez area where he first found roots in California. The stay in Santa Ynez was short-lived though, when the family found their true hometown in San Luis Obispo; a town where Joe would build lifelong friendships, find love and raise a family.
San Luis was great to Joe. He graduated SLO High in 1962 and built many friendships there that lasted a lifetime. Out of High School, Joe went on to Coalinga Community College, where he earned an AA degree. Out of college, Joe worked various jobs in San Luis Obispo, while also having fun, too. Golf and baseball/softball were passions of Joe's, along with having great times with friends around a barbecue, even better if at the lake.
July 28th, 1972 was a great day for Joe, it was the day that he married Kay and became the Dad of Desiree and Mike Elwell. He would go on to own Laurel Lane Liquor for some time, before Kay's family drew them to the San Diego area where he would work in the golf industry in a number of capacities.
Over the years Joe had a blessing in watching many grandchildren, even great-grandchildren, grow up. Joe had an amazing way with kids; supernatural in his ability to warm hearts, tell jokes and plain-old be fun to hang around. His love for family was sincere and immense, even through he struggled at times to convey this, later in life.
Joe leaves behind his Sister, Pat, and his Brother Scott. Also, Son and Daughter Mike and Desiree, respectively, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Our goal as surviving relatives is to make Joe proud, to make people laugh, grill a decent beef rib, watch a good ballgame and even head to the airport to watch an airplane or two.
We'll miss you, Joe.

I am so sad to hear this. Seeing these pictures, brings back a flood of memories. I was around for alot of these good times. Joe was a funny, kind, all-around great guy to be around. He was so good to me and welcomed me into his family and treated me like a daughter when I married his son, Michael. He was a father figure to me when I needed one. Being in his home was a wonderful, warm place to be! I watched as he was a wonderful Grandpa to Garrett and how much he loved his kids. His love of baseball was infectious and got me hooked on the Giants. His BBQ was unparalleled, his wit unmatched and his loss will be felt. I will never forget the great times spent with him and his family. A kind soul gone too soon. May he Rest in Peace. Much love to my family!

So sad to see my "old" friend leave us/me..... we had so much fun back in the 70's and 80's.... from being at Dan's bar or Sullys' or McCarthys or Bulls Tavern. We played on Sullys softball team and enjoyed each others company doing so many different things together. I will miss the big guy !!!!! Much love !!!!!!!!!!!!!
