I was privileged to work with Dick for about 25 years. In fact, I hired Dick as a Senior Technician in the Audio Visual - Communications Services. I was privileged to hire several technicians in my 43 years at Cal Poly, but Dick Tibbets was the best man of them all. His skills and ability to build the technical networks and my ability to get funds so we could build the first internet service of all the 19 campuses in the CSU System. This achievement was well recognized by our headquarters in Long Beach, Ca. Dicks personality was such that he was an instant friend of everyone he met. I did not know anyone on campus that didn't know Dick and loved him. I was very saddened and grieved to learn of his death many years ago. His wife Lynette was my secretary and both of them made a very important contribution to the success of the Communication Service Division of Cal Poly University. I will always be very grateful of being able to work with them. I will never forget Dick and also Lynette. If Lynette is still with us I wish her the best.

Lynette - You have my deepest sympathy. Dick was such a genuine person as well as a peach of a guy. I have such fond memories of him when we all worked in AV (you, Jim Shubin, Dean Crawford, Joe Codispoti - to name a few). AV was my first job at Cal Poly, and Dick made me feel so welcome. We all had many fun times together, and I think we got in trouble a few times! He was loved by many, but most of all by you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Lynette,

We were so very sorry to hear about Dick this afternoon. My 43 years at Cal Poly were greatly enhanced by my association and work with Dick. I remember the very day I meant Dick at the School District where he worked next to LAX. When Mark Gold and I interviewed him I knew he was a man for Cal Poly and I consider him the best person I every hired for the Communications Services group. I think that Dick's legacy will always be that he was a people person. He could enter a room of entire strangers and he immediately knew them all and put everyone at ease. He did this as a supervisor as well. Almost everyone at Cal Poly knew him and liked him. He was truly a lover of people. I know you will miss him greatly. We all will. I can honestly say my most fondest memories of Cal Poly were with Dick. Our prayers and thoughts are with you Lynette. Please give our condolences to the rest of the family for us.

We are all missing Uncle Dick here in the Hannum household....we have so many happy memories of times spent together with the two of you, and pictures to prove it! Dick embraced life and it was clear that you two were 'soul mates.' May the sweet memories provide comfort to you at this time of loss. We loved Dick and will really miss him.

How do you describe a man as special as Dick without sounding superficial or mushy, neither of which he would have put up with. Hard working; yep. Kind; yes. Clever; check. Honest; you betcha. Creative; oh yeah. Sense of humor; triple check. Soulmate to Lynette; elementary. He was someone that left a mark in my life. Someone who showed me what it meant to be a stand up guy. Thank you Dick – we’ll miss you.

LKT: Most times I know one but not the other spouse well and so I try my best to offer some part of my love of this life to the survivor i.e a part of me that might be special to them in this time of grief... but I knew Dick too and was so glad you two were such a pair as well as such a couple!!! So beyond what I sent earlier, which was for you, let me just add that he was and always will be a solid guy is a crowded room of whimps and backbenchers and thus was rare indeed ...and that you could, as the phrase goes, "count on him".
Reminds me of another friend of mine who once turned to me in a rather dicey bar confrontation and said " we didn't this far to check"...He died game. JJH

My heart goes out to Lynette, the love of his life, and to his family. I'm glad I got to know Dick a little through Lynette over the last few years. I will miss the talented photography and the tidbits of his wicked humor that were regularly shared. I am a proud owner of some of his handcrafted writing implements and will remember him when I use them.
