Douglas Waxler Obituary

Douglas H. Waxler, age 71, passed away on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at his home in Hollister, California, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. "Doug" was born to John and Jessica Waxler on December 27, 1951 in Tucson, Arizona, and moved to Ilo, Perú at the age of 7, where his dad worked for a desalination plant for Southern Peru Copper Corporation. He attended boarding school in Arizona from ages 13-17, and graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Accounting ("Go Cats!" as Doug would say). In 1978, he opened a CPA firm, Seghetti & Waxler, with accounting partner and friend Roy Seghetti, where they served individuals and businesses in Santa Cruz County for 40 years. Doug married the love of his life, Mindy Waxler, in 1979 and they raised 4 kids together in Soquel. Doug became an active participant in the county's youth sports, while also participating in his own recreational basketball and soccer clubs. He coached softball for over 20 years, and was Head Coach at Soquel High School, and Assistant Coach at Atascadero High School (in San Luis Obispo County) following his retirement. He was also one of the original founders of G-Ball, Girls Basketball League. Doug loved spending time with his wife, Mindy; together they traveled in their trailer throughout North America, including Alaska and Canada, built three homes, and had an unending list of projects (both exciting and all-too domestic), which they tackled side by side. Apart from family time and athletics, Doug's favorite activity was fly fishing on the Klamath River with best friend John Van Every. He is remembered for his sense of humor, the love he had for his family, the commitment to those he coached, and his unwavering positivity and optimism. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mindy Waxler; his brother, John Waxler II; his children, Brandi, Nicole, Christopher and Kacey; and his 8 grandchildren. Services were held privately to honor him and his legacy. Family, friends, athletes who remember hearing him say, "Catch the ball first," and others whose lives Doug touched, are invited to contribute to lung cancer research at Stanford Health Care (giving.stanford.edu, or call 669-277-0154).

Dear Mindy, Bruce and I were so sorry to read about Doug's passing. What a shock. Doug was such a great coach to Abby. He was instrumental in helping Abby to become an athlete and she employs many of the skills she learned from him today with her own kids....so his legacy lives on. As a parent, I so appreciated his patience and approachability. He was never anything other than friendly to me personally. Once again, Mindy, we are so very saddened and are sorry for you and your family's loss. Give Kacey a hug from me. Christy
