Joanna "Asha" Veil and her unborn daughter Anina Dragunowicz - Veil were tragedy murdered sometime around September 9th.
Asha was born Joanna Magdalena Dragunowicz in the Wroclaw, Poland June 15th 1978. She is survived by Her parents Teresa Dragunowicz and Zbigniew Dragunowicz who live in Poland with Asha's Grandmother Antonina and her brother Tomek. Also her Husband Richard Veil of Scotts Valley. Asha's MOTHER is recovering from a stroke brought on by this terrible crime.
Asha loved People. Music and life and was very excited about becoming a MOTHER. She was a caregiver before she became a cashier at Ben Lomond Market. Asha had a magic smile and way of kindness that emanated from her that was instantly obvious to anyone who met her.
At the market where she and went out of her way to say hello or goodbye to her customers. Or should I say friends.
Asha touched many people during her brief stay here in Santa Cruz county, which she loved for its natural beauty and interesting people.
Joanna's cousin has transported her and Anina's ashes home to Poland WITH the help of our congress people and Senators- Thank you!
Asha loved Joe Strummer, LEMON JELLY and The DVD "1 Giant Leap, fuchsia flowers and people. She was a very special unique woman and a tragic loss to the community.
Asha liked language. Her daughter's name, Anina, means Blooming flower and Asha means Hope. Ash's parents are beside themselves but she did get to see them in March of 06 for 3 weeks.
Asha was selfless in her actions helping me, her friends as well as ready to light up a strangers face with her Mona Lisa smile and "You Hoo greeting"
There are no words to express her loss to me, her friends her Family and our community.
A memorial fund has been set up in Joanna's name with Wells Fargo Bank, Account #9244583440 to help with related expenses and to help women and children.

Every year when the leaves begin to fall and the sun sets in late September I can't help but remember this terrible tragedy. Seventeen years ago I worked with Asha, from her first day until the last fateful day when she never returned. She was one of the nicest people I ever worked with. She always had something nice to say and a positive attitude. We would hang out in the little break room when she was pregnant and chat...one day she gave me this beautiful handmade card from Poland..just because she knew I loved art. Just because. I still look at it sometimes and wonder what she would have done with the rest of her life had she not been taken from us so soon. I imagine how pretty Anina would have been. I imagine all of the wonderful joys they would have shared. This affected me very deeply, especially once my son was born...he is 13 now. I cannot imagine life without him. I am deeply sorry for all of Asha's friends and family back in Poland. She is a beautiful soul that will live forever in our hearts. I am so sorry Richard. I pray you had the courage to carry on and be happy after this senseless tragedy.

There are two brass leaves on The Tree of Life, generously donated so I would have a place to go and visit them since their ashes were sent to Poland and there is no grave to visit. It is at the big cemetery Santa Cruz Memorial, by Ocean St in the Mausoleum building. You go in and look right where you will see a window with The Tree of Life and a brass leaf for Anina and Asha. I am very grateful that the Santa Cruz Memorial people did this to help honor this incredible woman who's life and the life of her daughter was tragically cut short.

I was one of Asha's roommates. She moved in with us when she became pregnant. It was a safe house with Christian women living in it. My sister had introduced her to me and asked me to look out for her. I really tried. There were many nights we sat at this table and talked. It looked like a little beach house, in the mountains, with palm trees and a garden in the back. It was, a house full of love and pets, Asha and two horse girls. I loved listening to Asha's music and trying the chocolate her mother sent her. We liked to share deserts. One of the roommates was a desert chef who baked all the time. I always think about her, I could never forget such a special person, just as beautiful as Kate Winslet. Here is a picture my mom took of Asha when she came to visit us. I hope to speak to her parents some day. May the Lord bless you with peace this holiday season. Sincerely, Julie

Dear Richard, My deepest condolences, my thoughts and mostly my prayers go out to you, Asha's family, and the friends of both of you. I just got the e-mail this morning and no matter how many times I read the news, I still am in disbelief. I hope and pray that all of you can lift up and move forward and be greatful for the good times you had with Asha. As humans we all take the simplest things in life forgranted and we all need to look around and be greatful for not only what we use to have, but all the wonderful things that we have today. I know Asha will always be alive in your hearts and in your thoughts each and every day. I will always remember the voice of this well known southern preacher talking about the dealings of lossing a loved one. At the end of his cermon, he yelled out in a heart felt feeling, "THEY ARE NOT IN YOUR PAST!!...THEY ARE IN YOUR FUTURE!! ..GLORY TO GOD!!" The more we understand this and believe it, the better we'll be able to get thru these tough times. I will keep you all in my prayers. Love, David

Richard,
I am very sorry for your loss. We are all poorer without Asha and her daughter in this world. I looked forward to my Saturday visits to the market to pick up a few things. Asha's smile always made my day. The last time I saw her she was playing with the babys foot and seemed very happy.
