Marian Hammond Obituary

Marian Reese Hammond
Dec. 26, 1923 - July 24, 2018
Mukilteo, WA
Marian Reese Hammond passed away peacefully on July 24, 2018, in Mukilteo, WA. Marian was born on December 26, 1923, in Kansas City, KS, to William J. and Almeda Scovill Reese. She attended Sophie Newcomb College at Tulane University and then moved to Cambridge, MA, to be near her sister Barbara. There she met George Hammond, whom she married in 1945.
In Cambridge, MA, Ames, IA, and Pasadena, CA, Marian and George raised five children, which was Marian's primary occupation, although she found time for volunteer activities including participation in the League of Women Voters, for which she served as Pasadena Chapter President. In 1972, Marian moved to Aptos, CA, and shortly thereafter to her beloved Santa Cruz, CA, where she lived longer than in any other place. Marian moved to Mukilteo, WA, in 2016 to be closer to her two older sons.
Marian was beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to so many. She was a gentle and sensitive soul, gracious and easy to love. She had deep reserves of strength that helped her face the many inevitable challenges of life. She was intelligent and artistic, a formidable Scrabble and bridge player, an avid walker, a skilled and prolific knitter, and a water-color artist. In later years she experienced decreasing abilities and an increasing need for help. Through it all she retained a bright and beautiful spirit. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
Marian was predeceased by brother Richard Reese and sisters Barbara Vogel and Harriet Wisely, and later-life friend Arthur McKenzie. She is survived by her brother William (Emmy) Reese and sister Katy (Jim) Bell, her five children, Kenric (Mary) Hammond, Janet Glover, Steve (Judy) Hammond, Barbara Bennett, and Jerry (Janet) Hammond, 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, longtime dear friends Pat Howard and Steve Foltz, and many other friends and family.
Marian's family wishes to express gratitude to the staff of Harbour Pointe Senior Living and Mukilteo Memory Care for the care and support they provided to her in the last two years of her life, as well as to Providence Hospice and Home Care of Snohomish County.
A memorial service for friends and family will be held at a time and place to be determined. In lieu of flowers, Marian's family requests consideration of memorial donations to the Salvation Army, the Alzheimer's Association, or charity of your choice.

Marian provided delicious meals and companionship to my parents (Ruth and Shorty)in their later years. She was a wonderful neighbor with a good sense of humor and a beautiful-beaming smile. Our condolences to the family.

We are so sorry for your loss. Marian was a wonderful friend and Bridge partner for my mother-in-law, Dorothy Burroughs of Capitola some years ago. When Dorothy's health deteriorated she enlisted the aid of Marion to prepare meals for her, which were always very gourmet and delivered with Marion's special love! I still use one of Marian's recipes. You were fortunate to have her and so were we! With deepest sympathy, Jane Burroughs and Family
(My husband Dean loved her, too. He just passed away July 31st.)
