Michael Steven Helm, age 73, recently of Knoxville, Tennessee, passed away on February 5, 2022.
Michael was born in Huntington, Indiana. In 1952, his parents moved to the Bay Area. Michael attended Los Altos High School where he was a member of the Junior Varsity Football team. In 1965, at the age of seventeen, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served four years as a Navy flight line mechanic, including a lengthy tour in Viet Nam during that war.
After the Navy, Michael learned the skills of construction, became a Master Carpenter and General Contractor, and subsequently, formed his own construction company. He remodeled and built lovely homes in the South Bay, Morgan Hill, and Santa Cruz area.
Later, he and his family moved to the Big Island, Hawaii, where he owned a macadamia orchard. In that island paradise, he developed a love of marlin fishing, often made his own lures and shared weekend fishing trips with family and friends.
He was a gifted "fixer". He loved restoring (especially if it contained wood, a motor, or wheels), from his first motorcycle, a 1935 INDIAN motorcycle, to an old Cessna plane he and a friend worked on until successful take-off. He loved using vintage tools and often roamed swap meet or antique stores, looking for that perfect tool to use on his projects.
Upon retiring, Michael offered his skills and services as a local handyman. No job was too small, and no one was refused. In the spirit of his Christian faith, he helped the elderly, the disabled, or anyone suffering hard times without regard to monetary gain.
Michael was predeceased by his adored younger brother, Terry and his beloved wife, Neida. He is survived by his devoted sons, Kenton, Blake, and Daren, as well as grandchildren, sisters, nephews and a niece, and many cousins.
He is missed by all who knew his love of fairness, his generosity, and his protector sensibility. Truly, he was well-named after the warrior Archangel Michael!
In lieu of burial services, his sons have planned a Navy Honor Guard Ceremony, to be announced in the near future.
