Sheryl Marie Johnston
May 13, 1955 - July 16, 2022
Resident of Hanford
Sheryl Marie Johnston, 67, passed away on July 16, 2022 in Hanford, California. She was born on May 13, 1955 to Thomas and Mary Hurley. She was a native of Santa Cruz, California. She graduated from Santa Cruz High School and the Cabrillo College Nursing Program.
Sheryl had a career in banking, but her true passion was nursing. She would tell you that her best job ever was working in the post-partum unit at Dominican Hospital, caring for new moms and their babies.
Sheryl was part of a close knit (pun intended) knitting circle that met every Wednesday. She derived much joy, solace, and laughter from her kinship with her knitting sisters.
Sheryl was an excellent seamstress who made fabulous and intricate Halloween costumes for her daughter. She was a skilled crafter, an avid reader, and adventurous traveler. One of her greatest joys was her pilgrimage to the Our Lady of Medjugorje Shrine in Bosnia. She was an accomplished shopper who amassed a treasure trove of beautiful jewelry and clothing. She also had a deep love of nature, especially birds, trees, and cats. She laughed easily and loved fiercely. A bright light has gone from our lives, but to quote a passage from The Little Prince, a book that Sheryl loved: "In one of the stars I shall be living, In one of the stars I shall be laughing."
Sheryl is survived by her daughter, Amanda Marie Johnston; grandson, Andre Jeremiah Johnston; brothers, Jeff (Katinka) Hurley, Greg (Beth) Hurley, and Tom Hurley; sister, Kathy (Tony) Webb; 4 nieces and 4 nephews.
Sheryl is preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Phillip Duane Johnston; father, Thomas Hurley, and mother, Mary Hurley.
