Karyl Ortega Obituary

Karyl Ann Ortega

1938 - 2024

On June 22, 2024, our beautiful wife, mother, Nanny and Great Nanny, Karyl Ann Ortega, peacefully passed away at home, surrounded by her family.

She was born on April 16, 1938 to Virginia (Jenny) Faye Wyse and Arthur Clarendon Young Sr. The family lived in a small house out in Casmalia on the Casmite oil lease. She attended Casmalia Elementary School and was very proud of where she grew up.

In her teen years, her family moved to Santa Maria where they purchased a house on Concepcion Avenue. Karyl attended Santa Maria High School and graduated in 1954. She enjoyed spending time with her friends from school, going to the beach, and hanging out at Rick's Drive-In. She met her future husband Robert James Ortega when he came home on a weekend pass from Camp Penelton. After returning from Korea, they got married at the Santa Barbara Court House on June 7, 1957. They were married for 67 years.

Karyl worked many jobs throughout her life. She worked for Studio Theatre, Bank of America, Sears, and Montgomery Ward. The job she loved the most, however, was being the librarian for Robert Bruce Elementary School in Santa Maria, where she worked for over 25 years.

During her retirement, Karyl enjoyed growing succulents, gardening, scrapbooking, reading, watching the birds in her backyard and spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed going to Waller Park to feed the ducks and squirrels, as well as her weekly visits to the Chumash Casino with her husband.

Karyl is survived by her husband, Robert James Ortega, daughter Caren Condon (Dave), son Ted Ortega (Beth), grandchildren Matthew Dockstader (Katy), Wendy Williams (Ray), Ryne Ortega, Julianne Ortega, Ashley Condon and several great grandchildren.

Karyl is proceeded in death by her son Ted Lee Ortega, her mother Virginia Faye Young, her father Arthur Clarendon Young and brother Arthur (Sonny) Clarendon Young Jr.

Karyl's family would like to thank Dr. Eric Gavarre and Dignity Hospice for their care and support during her final years. We would also like to thank everyone who helped care for Karyl throughout the past five years, especially her granddaughter Wendy Williams. Wendy, you have earned your angel wings many times over. Thank you for the loving care and compassion you showed for Nanny.

A celebration of life will take place at Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary on Friday, August 16th at 1:00pm.
