Charles Williams Obituary

Charles A. Williams of Savannah, Georgia passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on June 4, 2017, at the age of 88.

He was born in Schenectady, New York on September 4, 1928. Charles proudly served his country in the Army Signal Corps, and helped to build the DEW Line, a key component in America's Cold War defense strategy. The DEW Line was a series of radar stations in the high arctic designed to detect Soviet bombers.

Charles worked at ATT for 32 years, working his way up to be Director of Engineering for several buildings in New York City. After retiring from ATT, he went on to be the Director of Engineering at Franklin General Hospital in Long Island, New York.

Charles and his wife Joan moved to Savannah 25 years ago, living first on Tybee Island and then on Wilmington Island where they were involved in a variety of civic activities. Charles and Joan loved international travel and cruised frequently with a circle of close friends. A friendly and generous presence on the island, Charles adopted Southern hospitality as a way of life and touched many people.

Having lived a long and happy life, Charles is survived by his wife Joan Williams and his five children from a previous marriage: Christopher Williams (Amy Keiger-Williams), David Williams (Susan Williams), Mary-Ellen Flatow (Jonathan Flatow), Kevin Williams (Keeley Williams), and Lisa Williams-Hohlfeld (Michael Hohlfeld), and two step-children, Susan Tibbs (Andre Tibbs) and Gary Pulaski (Jennifer Pulaski), as well as 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Shirley-Jean Cross.

A memorial service will be held at the All Saints Episcopal Church on Tybee Island on June 17th at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Tybee Historical Society or the All Saints Episcopal Church.

The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Memorial Health Hospital of Savannah and the staff of Hospice Savannah, with special appreciation for the long and dedicated care rendered by Dr. Kenneth Hardigan.
