Corey Goodnature Obituary

Corey J. Goodnature died protecting our freedom on June 28, 2005 in Eastern Afghanistan. Corey was a quiet man who was dedicated to serving his country and family. He loved being outdoors, enjoyed hunting and fishing with his boys. Since childhood, he lived up to the family name, carrying a gentle demeanor, yet strong presence. Corey was a devoted husband, a loving father and a dedicated Night Stalker. Corey served his nation for 14 years spending seven of those years doing what he particularly loved- flying with fellow Night Stalkers and supporting Special Operations Forces. Corey is survived by his wife Lori Goodnature of Savannah, sons, Shea and Brennan of Fort Leavenworth KS., his parents, Deb and Don Goodnature of Clarks Grove MN., his sister, Amy Purdy of Alden MN., his grandmothers, Deloris Goodnature and Lola Partlow of Albert Lea MN., and many other family members and friends who loved him and will miss him dearly. Corey died doing something he d eeply believed in and is a true hero to our nation, his family, and friends. We are all grateful for Corey's undeniable dedication and sacrifice as well as that of those he served and died with. This dedication and sacrifice allow all of us to enjoy our freedoms and liberty in this great nation. To the family of Chief Warrant Officer Corey J. Goodnature:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Goodnature Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

June 28 2010.
Honoring the life, service, courage and sacrifice of a fine American serviceman.
May those who love him have found some peace in their lives, particularly as the anniversary of his passing approaches. This young man, in his brief life, has left a legacy that will stand you in good stead as the years go by. Clearly, from what was written in his obituary, he lived up to his name Goodnature but he also had a calling to serve and protect, and I'm pretty sure that he had no regrets over his choice of vocation. Very kind wishes to all of you from someone not fortunate enough to know Corey personally, but who can recognise what a special man he was to you.

Don, I am so sorry to hear about the losing of your son Corey CWO. I never knew him but I am sure he was a very fine young man and a son who made his Father proud on many occasions. I have one son, my firstborn, who I am very proud of and I have tried to imagine what a heart wrenching experience it would be for his mother and I if we were ever to lose him suddenly. But I must admit Don, that I cannot even begin to understand how deep your sorrow and grief must be since that day when you first learned of his helicopter going down in the Hindu Kush Mts. attempting a rescue. I want to thank you Don and your wife for raising such a great American who is a hero to me and many other Americans I am sure. A man who is deserving of the greatest respect and honor for his willingness to put his life in peril in one of the most dangerous places to serve and to ultimately give his life to protect us Americans so that we can continue to live in freedom and security. Don, every time the American Flag passes by me in a parade of any kind I will gladly stand and put my hand upon my heart and give thanks and always remember your son's valor and your families great sacrifice and I will then pray a silent prayer that the Lord will comfort you and your family and bring you a lasting peace. There must be a special place reserved in Heaven for those such as your son!

Lori, you dont know me but I knew Corey. We served together in Hawaii. He reinlisted me on the Arizona in Pearl Harbor. I left Hawaii in 98 and didnt see him again till Rucker in 01. I was on CQ as a Drill Sgt when I learned of his death I couldnt imagine that he was gone. I just wanted you to know that I will never forget him, I still have my reinlistment Flag that we raised that day. It is encased with the picture of Him and I together. I will always miss Corey.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Corey, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Dear Goodnature Family,
I would personally like to thank the Goodnature family for providing to our nation a true American hero. A hero is one who goes the extra mile to help his fellow man even though his own life is in jeopardy. Corey did this and more.
I never had the honor of meeting Corey but I have met his parents. His parents are very fine people and I know they raised a son that turned out to be the best that America has. The United States is a great nation because its mothers and fathers raise and train quality sons and daughters. The United States lost a great son when Corey gave up his life in the service of his country. Thank You for your heroic service C.W.O. Corey Goodnature and Thank You Don and Deb Goodnature for raising such a fine son.

What a very brave individual you have in your family that would give up a life for their homeland and its people so they can remain free. Your Freedom Fighter has served the Country above and beyond the call of duty, let no one ever tell you different. With the mission now completed your Warrior has been redeployed to Heaven to sit on the right hand of the Supreme Commander and Chief. The Father above has Corey in his arms and will give him peace as well as eventually easing your pain and suffering. God speed to you and Chief Warrent Officer Corey J. Goodnature, our HERO. We are so proud of them that are willing to sacrifice for this great Nation, THANK YOU.

You and I went to jump school and then the Parachute Rigger course together in "92". After you left for flight school, I always looked for you in the pilot's seat whenever I jump. I imagined you piloting our jump pass, with that big grin on your face. It took me a year to catch up to you in 2002. Luckily your uncle forwarded my message to you. Through-out my tours in OEF, I've asked everyone I knew if they had heard from you. I came across this web page dedicated to you. Thank you to the one who made this available because it's the only way I knew where you were...still in the sky without landing for fuel. My heart goes out to the friends who knew you. A special thank you to your family, for giving me a chance to call you my Friend. When I hear the sound of a distance chopper, I'll always remember you and smile.

To the family of Chief Warrant Officer Corey J. Goodnature:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 27 May, 2007. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “Remembering” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,
Leila Campbell

Maureen and I wanted to extend our deepest sympathies to the Goodnature family on their loss. CWO Corey Goodnature and his Special Ops guys, among others, were killed in the helicopter crash brought down by enemy fire while trying to come to the rescue of our son, Lt. Michael P. Murphy and his small SEAL team in the mountains of Kunar province, Afghanistan. We share your grief over the loss of a loved one and are forever grateful that Michael was surrounded by such great and loyal friends who were willing to lay down their lives for each other, GOD and country. These men were true blue "American Heros" and will never be forgotten in our hearts, minds or prayers. We salute the sacrifice of Chief Warrant Officer Goodnature and his Teammates in the 160th Special Operations Aviation Group in their attempt to come to the aid of our Mike and his men. You are all true American heros.

As Abraham Lincoln once wrote " in the solemn pride that must be yours, to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom." These are men who will live on in the memories of those who follow in the fight for freedom and justice. Know that you are in our hearts and prayers.

I am sorry this comes so late, I was out of town when it happened and didn't learn of Corey's tragic till I got home and read the back issues of the Star Tribune.

I was a friend of Corey's at the U of M, where we were in the AFROTC together. He was quiet, but a favorite with everyone. I had a lot of respect for him. The country owes you and your family a debt of gratitude, and I know that you can always be proud of how he served his fellow man, just because it was the right thing to do. I know the pain of losing a loved one lasts a lifetime; but slowly, the pangs grow weaker and the joy and love that he gave you will stay strong. My thoughts and prayers are with you, now and as time goes by.
