Cullen Chambers Obituary

Cullen G. Chambers - SAVANNAH - Cullen G. Chambers. Born November 14, 1950, died January 20, 2014. He was a native of Monticello Arkansas but traveled widely both nationally and internationally due to his father's naval career as well as his own professional and personal interest. He attended Florida State University where he double majored with a degree in Government and History. He and his wife Christine have lived in the Savannah area for the past twenty years while he served as Executive Director of the Tybee Island Historical Society. He also served on a variety of national lighthouse boards and projects and became nationally and internationally well known and respected for his volunteer contributions to the lighthouse and historic preservation communities. He started his journey in historic preservation by assisting Florida Secretary of State Bruce Smathers on the Campaign to save the Florida State Capitol from demolition between 1974-1977 while he was still attending Florida State University. He began his hands on preservation career at Fort Zachary Taylor in Key West Florida, where he assisted Howard England in preservation and interpretation of the fort and excavation and preservation of the thousands of civil war artifacts buried within the forts casements. He directed the restoration of the Key West Light Station, the St. Augustine Light Station and most recently the Tybee Island Light Station. He was also proud to have been able to consult on a variety of other preservation projects ranging from historic lighthouses, fortifications, churches, schools, cemeteries, and perhaps the most unusual Lucy the Elephant located in Margate New Jersey. His most recent volunteer project, was the Dr. Steward Home in Portal Georgia and the Fort Screven Post Theater built in 1930. He is survived by his wife Christine Chambers, his twin brother Curtis Chambers and his younger brother Roy Lain. In lieu of flowers he requested that anyone inclined to make a donation in his name do so to the Friends of the Tybee Post Theater P.O. Box 2356 Tybee Island Georgia 31328 and for Tybee Island residents to purchase a Historic Preservation Auto Tag as soon as possible. He requested a memorial service if held to take place at the Historic Hasting's High School in Hastings Florida just outside of St. Augustine Florida. He worked as a volunteer consultant and grant writer for the school for thirteen years and considered that project the most important of his life and career. I never met Cullen, but I have seen the fruits of his labors: the lighthouses he worked with such dedication to preserve. I thank him for that invaluable service and hope his example with inspire others to continue such important work.

My husband Mark Cochard got aquainted with Cullen when Cullen came to Phila. to help dismantle a lighthouse lens at the Franklin Institute. Mark's company needed it moved to do work at the institute. A friendship bloomed and on a vacation we saw Cullen at Tybee Island. Restoration was in its infancy but we were able to share Cullen's enthusiasm as he told us of upcoming projects. On a later visit we saw what everyone's efforts produced. He was so dedicated to everything he touched & more importantly a great person. So saddened by the news which I read about in my lighthouse magazine. He lives on in all those whose lives he touched. Our thoughts are with the family.

Christine,
We are all still sadened by the passing of our friend Cullen and find it hard to believe it has been 20 years since he left St. Augustine. Recently the 'old gang' got together and we stopped and toasted our friend.
Memories will soon not be forgotten.
All the best,
Paul, Catalina, Virginia, Rusty, Dianne, and Nancy.

The entire lighthouse preservation community grieves with Christine and the rest of Cullen's family. He was a particularly bright light in the effort to preserve America's maritime heritage, and he was a true gentleman and a good friend. A recipient of the Ross Holland Award for lifetime achievement in lighthouse preservation, he leaves an amazing legacy of contributions to the heritage he worked so hard to preserve. We will deeply miss him. On behalf of myself and the U.S. Lighthouse Society, I offer condolences to his family and his many friends -- we care, and share your sorrow.

January 28, 2014

On behalf of the American Lighthouse Council, I wish to extend condolences to Cullen's family. I served with Cullen years ago on the board of the Key West Maritime Historical Society. I'll never forget the night we held a fund-raiser on the grounds of the Key West Lighthouse Museum and he ended up chasing everyone around the place with a water hose while we were trying to get things cleaned up at the end. That was also the night he allowed me to crawl around inside the tight confines of the miniature Japanese sub that had been recovered immediately after the events at Pearl Harbor. A few years later he invited me to St. Augustine to give a shipwreck lecture to some of his patrons & volunteers at that facility. We connected far too seldom via phone after he left FL and I relocated to NC. Cullen was as fun-loving as any individual I've ever met which was probably why we got along so well. But at the same time he was a consummate professional in the realm of historic preservation. Cullen will be sorely missed by his family and my sincere condolences go out to them. He will also be missed by the preservation community at large and his many colleagues. Rest in peace my friend.
