I never met Cullen, but I have seen the fruits of his labors: the lighthouses he worked with such dedication to preserve. I thank him for that invaluable service and hope his example with inspire others to continue such important work.

My husband Mark Cochard got aquainted with Cullen when Cullen came to Phila. to help dismantle a lighthouse lens at the Franklin Institute. Mark's company needed it moved to do work at the institute. A friendship bloomed and on a vacation we saw Cullen at Tybee Island. Restoration was in its infancy but we were able to share Cullen's enthusiasm as he told us of upcoming projects. On a later visit we saw what everyone's efforts produced. He was so dedicated to everything he touched & more importantly a great person. So saddened by the news which I read about in my lighthouse magazine. He lives on in all those whose lives he touched. Our thoughts are with the family.

Christine,
We are all still sadened by the passing of our friend Cullen and find it hard to believe it has been 20 years since he left St. Augustine. Recently the 'old gang' got together and we stopped and toasted our friend.
Memories will soon not be forgotten.
All the best,
Paul, Catalina, Virginia, Rusty, Dianne, and Nancy.

The entire lighthouse preservation community grieves with Christine and the rest of Cullen's family. He was a particularly bright light in the effort to preserve America's maritime heritage, and he was a true gentleman and a good friend. A recipient of the Ross Holland Award for lifetime achievement in lighthouse preservation, he leaves an amazing legacy of contributions to the heritage he worked so hard to preserve. We will deeply miss him. On behalf of myself and the U.S. Lighthouse Society, I offer condolences to his family and his many friends -- we care, and share your sorrow.

I served with Cullen years ago on the board of the Key West Maritime Historical Society. I'll never forget the night we held a fund-raiser on the grounds of the Key West Lighthouse Museum and he ended up chasing everyone around the place with a water hose while we were trying to get things cleaned up at the end. That was also the night he allowed me to crawl around inside the tight confines of the miniature Japanese sub that had been recovered immediately after the events at Pearl Harbor. A few years later he invited me to St. Augustine to give a shipwreck lecture to some of his patrons & volunteers at that facility. We connected far too seldom via phone after he left FL and I relocated to NC. Cullen was as fun-loving as any individual I've ever met which was probably why we got along so well. But at the same time he was a consummate professional in the realm of historic preservation. Cullen will be sorely missed by his family and my sincere condolences go out to them. He will also be missed by the preservation community at large and his many colleagues. Rest in peace my friend.

We are so very sorry to learn of Cullen's passing. He was so devoted to Historic Preservation and to Tybee's Beautiful Lighthouse.
He may not have been born to Tybee, but he was ours and we loved him.
