Fred Kazlow Obituary

Dr. Fred C. Kazlow - SAVANNAH - Dr. Fred C. Kazlow, 80, of Savannah, GA, passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday, March 21, 2010. Dr. Kazlow was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, the youngest of 3 sons. Following his high school education, he went on to graduate from Brooklyn College. He then married his summer camp sweetheart, Gloria Shapiro. From that point he went on to graduate from New York University School of Dentistry. Dr. Kazlow then joined the US Air Force and was stationed at Hunter Air Force Base here in Savannah. Fred and Gloria fell in love with Savannah and decided to make it their home. Dr. Kazlow was a devoted and loving parent for his three children, and doting grandfather to his four grandchildren. He remained devoted to his wife Gloria, who he has cared for at Savannah Squares Nursing Facility. Dr. Kazlow practiced dentistry for over 50 years in Savannah. His office, located on the corner of Liberty and Bull Streets, across from the DeSoto-Hilton Hotel, became a Savannah landmark. There he treated 3 generations of Savannahians and was loved by his patients. He always said that "attached to every tooth is a person" and he always got to know that person. He was a "painless" dentist who put a smile on a thousand faces. He was a respected member of Congregation Mickve Israel, and of the Savannah community at large. He is survived by his loving wife of over 55 years, Gloria S. Kazlow; their three children, Susan Kazlow Friedland, Dr. Gary Kazlow and Jodi Dawn Kazlow; four grandchildren, Arielle Kazlow, Sam, David and Mariah Friedland; a brother, Bernard Carson ( Bernice); a sister in law, Dr. Carol Kerr, of Savannah, and several nieces and nephews. Graveside Service: 1:00 p.m. Tuesday March 23, 2010 at Bonaventure Cemetery with Rabbi Arnold Belzer officiating. Memorial Contributions: Temple Mickve Israel in memory of Dr. Fred C. Kazlow, 20 E. Haskell and I loved Freddie and Gloria. When they visited Cleveland, Fred enjoyed going to Little Italy to purchase ingredients for his gourmet cooking, going to Blossom Center for a classical symphony or just reminiscing about the old days and discussing the future, Dear friends - sorely missed - bit alive in my memories. Best wishes and love to Susan, Gary and Jody.

I am saddened that I only recently found out about the loss of Dr. Kazlow. He was a wonderful man and dentist. I have been a patient of his for 20+ years, and after I was married, my husband and children also became patients of Dr. Kazlow. My boys loved going to see him and getting a balloon with a mint-floss string attached. We will all miss him. I also loved hearing stories about his children, wife and grandchildren, and will never forget thinking he was the best grandfather in the world, hearing about the treasure hunts he would create for his grandchildren and how he took them to the fire station to visit with doughnuts for the fire fighters. He will be missed by all. Our thoughts and prayers to his family.

I just learned of Dr. Kazlow's passing. It saddens me greatly to know of his passing so late that I was unable to come and show my respect for him. I met Dr. Kazlow many years ago when I drove for Airborne Express. I had dental problems, and he was ready to help me at a moments notice. With my work load and the long hours I had to put in to take care of my children on my own, he made the time to see me when I had a moments time. He would even put me in the chair to check me out while I was picking up packages he was sending out! Through the years, I brought my children as well as my siblings to Dr. Kazlow. They all found what I found in him. A caring compassionate man who truely loved his profession. I had always been afraid of dentists, but he showed me that I had no reason to fear him.
I went to work at a dollar store later in life, and I was so surprised to see the kind face of Dr. Kazlow walk thru the doors one day. Imagine my surprise! I was so happy to see him! He was buying balloons and such for the kids that came to see him. So very thoughtful!
I only saw one time when Dr. Kazlow wasnt being cheerful. That was when his wife got sick. He was so worried about her! I could tell he loved her with all his soul. That made me love him as my dentist even more. Here was a man who loved what he did for his living. Loved those people he gave beautiful smiles to, but loved his partner in life with every fiber of his being. I earned a new respect for him that day.
Everytime he came into the dollar store, I would ask after Mrs. Kazlow. He loved her so much, and it warmed my heart that here was a love story that was lifelong.
There could never be another dentist as Dr. Kazlow. He showed everyone who came in contact with him, that here was a man among men.
To the Kazlow family..Im so sorry for your loss. Your father, husband, grandfather, uncle..was a wonderful human being. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The world lost a beautiful soul..and God brought home a bright star to sit with him.
May God give you the strength to endure the loss and comfort you with beautiful memories a great man.

Dr. Fred C. Kazlow

Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Dentist, and Friend

Our beloved father will be missed. He was a humble, kind, gentle, compassionate and extremely creative human being -- A Man Among Men.

He was a dentist, who believed that, “attached to every tooth was a person” and he always tried to get to know that person. He was a story writer, a furniture and jewelry maker, a teller of funny stories with a warm sense of humor, a tireless driver, who visited family and friends, an outstanding chef and baker, and a grandfather who helped give his grandchildren the most unique birthday parties!!

He always said that everyone wears an invisible sign across their chest that says: “I’m important.” Hence, he always made an effort to make everyone
around him feel that they were special. He was a patient listener, who then gave good and helpful advice.

Dad, you and your office at the corner of Liberty and Bull streets were, and forever will be, a Savannah landmark. We know you will always be there in spirit leaning over the balcony, contently looking down at the passersby, while smoking your trademark cigar.

We will cherish your memory forever.

I always looked forward to visits with Uncle Fred, as I could count on a trove of great stories and jokes, lovingly prepared food, and a lot of attention. I remember in particular one visit to Savannah where Uncle Fred made a special trip to the grocery store so he could make a "NY style" onion/lox/egg white omelet for me.

Even though we did not have a direct linear relationship on the family tree, when I was with Uncle Fred, I felt like one of his grandchildren. And from the stories and photos, I know how much he loved and enjoyed Sam, Dave, Mariah, and Arielle, as well.

I take comfort in knowing that anytime we share a good joke or a good meal, Uncle Fred's legacy lives on -- especially if we brush our teeth afterward.

I've known Dr. Kazlow for 37 years, both as his patient and his good friend. He was a great and unselfish caregiver. No matter how busy he was on any given day of the week, he always found time to give me a quick phone call, to see how I was doing. I will sorely miss him and his companionship. It is a great loss to all his friends and family.
God bless you Fred, and I pray for you every day.

How we miss our brother Fred. We spoke every day - he called us or we called him, but we always communicated. We even exchanged jokes long-distance (most of the really funny ones were his). We shared a love of good eating, and exchanged recipes and even food. Fred was concerned with our health and welfare and made us feel as if we lived next door, although we were almost 1,000 miles apart.

Fred also made us realize the importance of family and good friends. He was constantly on the road, visiting his brothers and their families, cousins, and old dear friends. Through Fred and because of Fred, we actually were able to reconnect with long last friends from our early days.

We treasured his trips north to see us, despite the deepest snowstorms and a journey of at least 15 hours each way. While we will miss him forever more, we know how we lucky were to have Fred in our lives.

Dear Grandpa,

I am not sure where to begin so I will just start with my first memory. I remember a series of birthday parties that I had in my early childhood. The one in particular was a pirate party, and you were the lead pirate. Your time and creativity that went into this party and so many after was one of the fundamental pinnacles of my childhood. More now then ever, I am able to realize how much these meant to me, and how much of yourself you put into these events. You made me feel like the most special person in the world, and I know that what you were saying with each cake, party idea, and costume is that you loved me and wanted me to be happy. What I didn’t know then is that this creativity and caring for the happiness of others was entrenched in every facet of your life. There is not a person that you have met that has not been touched by you. Whether you patients, friends, family, or just an acquaintance, you made everyone feel like the most special person in the world. In a world that I am always finding more hateful and harsh, you were a bright beacon of love and compassion.
I can remember when you came to Atlanta and brought with you our first computer. I was ill and you picked me up in your lap and made me read the entire instructional manual cover to cover. You did this because you wanted me to improve my ability to read. You had a strong value for education and taught me that with hard work and perseverance I could accomplish anything. You didn’t accept failure as an option, and you didn’t allow me to think that I could fail. You believed in me before I had faith in myself, and it is because of your caring nature and love that I have been able to succeed in so many aspects of my life. My only wish is that you could have been there for my graduation that you worked so hard to make possible.
I am losing a piece of my heart today. Grandpa you are one of the most noble, compassionate, and loving people I have ever known. It is with the greatest sadness that I write to you one last time. I wish I could have said goodbye and told you that I love you one last time. There is so much else that I wanted you to teach me. You will remain in my heart and thoughts forever.

Your Loving Grandson,

Sam

Dr. Kazlow was a gentleman with a generous heart and a gentle spirit. Clark and I always enjoyed visiting with him at his office on the corner of Liberty & Bull... Stop by an art gallery, visit the smoke shop, and chat on his steps on a Saturday afternoon. His corner of the world was a GREAT one because of him! We will miss him terribly. Dr.Kaslow will truly be missed but not forgotten. As a kid growing up on the Carolina side of the river I will always remember through the 70's and 80's crossing the bridge going into Savannah and looking down at the city having my mom say there's his office right down there.Never were there any nervice moments in his office. It always seemed as though he was someone in your family who just worked on teeth. A very kind soul who will be truly missed as if someone removed river street from savannah's water front. To this day when I cross the bridge going into Savannah I always look down and think about Dr. Kaslow. He was and always will be a part of my life and I am sure many others.

I have serviced Dr. Kazlow for the past six years as his mailperson on Liberty Street. He has been as kind and nice to me then til the very last time I saw him.. I am sad to see him gone. He told a few jokes every now and then, offered me several powered donuts (while he knew I was on a diet!), and was just an all around good guy. And what dentist do you know ALWAYS has sweets???? I always left his office everyday with a 'be good Dr. Kazlow', he had no idea just how good I thought he was to me. I'm gonna miss him very much......Nicole James, Mail Lady

Freddie and I first met in Sept. 1952 as Freshmen at NYU College of Dentistry. That's 58 years ago. Both our last names started with the letter "K" so we sat near each other in all the classes and lectures.
We immediately knew we liked each other and have been friends ever since. Two weeks ago Freddie drove down to Florida to spend the weekend with me and we had a wonderful time. When my Wife died last November Freddie was my pillar of strength as anyone who knew him can underatand. We spoke on the phone and over the internet daily and His warmth always came thru. He was my good friend and I will miss Him every day. My deepest sympathy to Gloria and His entire loving Family. Good bye my friend. Toley

Fred cared deeply about his family. He drove all the way down to New York to visit my grandpa Bernie (Fred's brother) and they cooked up a storm. Bernie and Fred were brothers not only in blood but also in the way they treated other people and never stopped making the most of life. It was only a few months ago that I talked to Fred on the phone. He showed a real interest in how I was doing, and what I was interested in. I was blessed to have had Fred in my life. I have had the privilege of getting to know Dr. Kazlow some 20 years ago, when I took a job downtown. Dr. Richard Dooley, my dentist of many years, retired about the same time, and a co-worker told me about Dr. Kazlow. His office was near mine, which made it convenient, and he also took early morning appointments, which suited my schedule perfectly. He was always concerned about my welfare, didn't do things I didn't need to have done, and always had a joke or a story to tell. I am so glad I had the oportunity to get to know him. Dearest Susan, Gary and Jodi,
My heart goes out to you and to your mother. Your father was a very special man and he loved you deeply. I have so many fond memories of him, our times together with Haskell and Gloria, the things he did for you and how very, very much he loved you and the joys you brought him. . I know you will miss him deeply. I lost my father when I was just 16 years old, but he has remained with me always as a precious memory and and example of what can be fine and good in life. I know it will be the same for you. As you probably know, Haskell died eight years ago. He and Fred enjoyed each other and who knows - perhaps they are doing so now. One does not know. At any rate, my heartfelt sympathies to you. May you all have a good life, as that is what your father would want for you. Love, Sue Heller

To the Kazlow family, your Dad & Grandad was such a wise, considerate and compassionate man.He was our dentist for 39 years. When our son was only 4, he scheduled Saturday appts. for him to become adjusted to the chair. He would play with him by blowing up a balloon and easing the chair up and down. This way, when he was of age for cleanings, he would have no fear. No fear or pain was his main concern. Two of our favorite restaurants in Savannah were based on his recommendations to try them.He loved to go to a good movie as well! He was more than our dentist, he was our FRIEND.We loved this man ! He will be greatly missed but his memory will live on. Prayers go up for all of you at this difficult time. May God Bless.

Dr. Kazlow has been our family dentist for 3 generations. My parents were his patients, he prepared me as a teenager for braces, and likewise did the same for 2 of our children. Our grandchildren were just coming of age to begin seeing a dentist. What a legacy he leaves! He was an icon in Savannah dentistry! Our thoughts and prayers will be with you during this difficult time.

On this sad day may it help to know how many hearts are touched by your loss how many thoughts are with you and your family. Dr. Kazlow and I would always talk about my mom Kay and how she loved to go to Authur Murrays dance studio downstairs. He always told me how much he and Mrs Kazlow missed my mom when she passed. God bless you

Dr. Kazlow was my dentist for 38 years. When I moved to Alabama for three years, my visits back to Savannah always included an appointment to see him. I grew up in a family with five kids and in the 60's when my parents had a large young family and times were tough, Dr Kazlow let my mother pay a him a small monthly payment for treating all of us. I never forgot that and even though I live over 2 hours from Savannah, I have continued to see him as my dentist. I had such respect for him and want his family to know he was a fine man and a great dentist. He always took time to ask what was happening with me and my family. My deepest sympathy to his family.

There is not enough words to say how I feel about Dr. Kazlow. I worked for him for 10 years and he was the kindest most gentle man to everyone. He loved Mrs. Kazlow and his family dearly. He got so much pleasure telling me about his trips to see his grandchildren and his children. His friendship meant the world to me. So now I have many good memories of him. He did what he loved doing going to the office and taking care of his patients in his special way. He will be missed dearly.

To Dr. Kazlow's family- He was a wonderful man as well as Dentist. My husband and I were patients of his for only about 7 years but he made it seem he knew us forever. He had great stories to tell us as he worked on our mouth. And yes he always tried to make it painless.
He will be very much missed and never forgotten.

Wow, I don't know what to say about a truly good man. He will be missed terribly. I was so afraid of the dentist, but Dr. Kazlow was always so gentle and caring that I even went through a root canal. To the family, know that he truly loved you all, and keep his fond memories alive to help you in this time of sorrow. The Cooper Family. Richmond Hill Ga.

I will never forget my first and only visit to Dr. Kazlo (I have since moved from Savannah.) I was a graduate student at the time and short on money. I needed a crown and was frightened about the procedure. Dr. Kazlow fixed me up just right and made sure I was comfortable from start to finish. When I left his office, I felt like I had just had a nice visit with an old friend. My prayers are with you.

God Bless Dr. Kazlow, I will never forget him. He was my childhood dentist and the last visit with him was when I was 20 when he pulled all four of my wisdom teeth out. I loved his office, and will never forget reading the Peter Pan book when I was about 10 yrs old by the window over looking beautiful Savannah. Thank you Dr. Kazlow for the memories and good care you gave to me and my family over the decades.

Dr Kazlow was my Dentist for 42 years. I have such fond memories of him at the age of 5. I remember sitting at that same little tiny table in his office and coloring. No matter how much time went by between visits he never forgot the last conversation that you had of the names of your family members. He truely cared about his patients not just their teeth. He was quite a man and there will never be another one like him. He will be truely missed by all.
