Jim Bitler Obituary

Jim Bitler - SAVANNAH - Jim Bitler, the face of Ossabaw Island, the on-island working stiff of the Ossabaw Island Foundation, the go-to man for Sandy West, who gifted the island to the state of Georgia 30 years ago, died Sunday afternoon while taking a nap. He was 55. Paul Pressly, the Foundation's Education Alliance Director, was on the island at the time. Pressly knew something was amiss after he called Bitler repeatedly, only to get Jim's upbeat and unmistakable message: "If I don't answer, chances are I am somewhere on this beautiful island loving my job." Few can boast so much love for their job. Accompanied by his two Boston terriers, Beau ("that's Beau-regardless," he would say) and Kate ("Katherine the Great"), Bitler would greet visitors at the dock, load them in his truck, drive them to their quarters and start the magic. Through him, the island's history came alive. He was scientist, raconteur and naturalist. He could point out the island's 11 long leaf pine trees. He knew the gestation period of an armadillo (120 days), how to identify and cook "chicken of the tree" (an island mushroom) and just the right amount of oyster shells, lime, sand and water to recreate the original tabby surface of the three standing slave cabins on the island's north end. His quarters were simple, his mind a steel-trap retrieval system. He was a stand-up comedian. If he bumped up a story a notch or two, it was only to make it better. To Mrs. West, his longtime compatriot and co-conspirator, the impish Bitler was "Pieface" or "James James Morrison Wethery George Dupree Milne." He taught himself to make baskets out of sweet grass. He was a watercolorist. He grew indigo. Bitler, who spent seven years at Ossabaw, graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in wilderness skills. As a naturalist he worked for Little St. Simons, Wilderness Southeast, the Sea Island Company and Disney's Hilton Head Resort, where he was employee of the year, "which meant I had to walk across the stage in giant Mickey Mouse shoes in front of Maya Angelou, who was speaking." He also was a concierge at Savannah's Hampton Inn. He is survived by one brother, Jon Bitler of Sanford, Fla., one sister, Douglass Strickland of Tallmadge, Ohio, one niece, Douglass Bitler, his partner of 18 years, Jack Sinopoli, and legions of friends and admirers. Funeral services, which are being handled by Fairhaven Funeral Home, are pending. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Ossabaw Island Foundation, 305 Fahm St., Sav'h 31401. Always in our prayers and memories. Working the Disney window with you and those excursions to Pinckney Island were hysterically memorable. Your knowledge of everything in nature was a gift. Miss you buddy!

I can't believe it has been 8 years! You were my best friend in high school. You drew me to Savannah and Ossabaw Island. You showed me why Ossabaw was such a special place. I retired from Ohio and moved here. I had hoped to be able to enjoy your company for a while longer, but I have had the privilege to continue to enjoy Ossabaw and help out in a very small way. Thank you for your inspiration, your dedication, your sharp wit and mesmerizing stories.
I miss you my friend.

I lost track of the "boys"for a few years. They never left my heart. I would hear how Jim was loving the Island and I would miss our short times together,Jim was a great story teller and entertainer.Jim and Jack just were the best company. Recently Jim came to the mall...all who know Jim, know that him coming to town was a special thing ,but to the mall... He called me out and I got the BIGGEST hug,and in Jim fashion...time never moved. He looked happy and as always, made my day. I will always be grateful that I got that last hug. That's what a true genuine friend is...and Jim and Jack are the perfect role models. I am humbled to be able to have been blessed to know such beautiful souls. It will always have been too soon to lose Jim.

What a shock. Working at Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort was truly a pleasure and Jim's love of all things natural was evident in everything he did. He was one of a kind. I am so very sad to hear of his death. Kyle Wallace

Oh Jim. I don't cry for just anyone, you know. But people like you aren't supposed to die. Ever. It's been 15 years since we worked together on Hilton Head Island. I can still hear you laughing at some Mickey Mouse insanity that too often took place. Your spirit must live in the breeze, because I feel it even now in Greencastle Indiana. I wonder how many lives you actually did touch and leave your remarkable, infinite imprint on? Certainly mine...

I cannot believe that he died so young and with so much left to do for Ossabaw Island. Still, he did accomplish a great deal. We must all pitch in to ensure that the vision that he shared with Sandy West continues to be realized on Ossabaw Island.

He will surely be missed but never forgotten as his memory will live on in the hearts and memories of those he touched with his true southern hospitality and love for life and Ossabaw.

April 19, 2011

It is difficult to express the feelings of first the shock and then the sadness with the news of Jim's passing. We, Peach and I, had just spent a few hours with him that week as he entertained and educated the tour group we had brought over a few days before. We had just spoke with him by phone on Saturday, planning the next visit. Now he is gone and we have yet to realize the loss we have suffered with his passing.
I'll go to the dock again and I don't know how I will handle the fact that I can't call him on the cell phone and tell him we are passing hell gate which was his signal to start for the dock. He won't be there to take a line and chastize us for our lousy seamanship against the current and wind.I won't be able to settle in and once again, as I had done many times, listen to Jim bring the history of Ossabaw Island to life for his captivated audience. He used the history of the island as an introduction to Ossabaw now and helped us understand it's continuing gift to all of us.
I worry about how Sandy West will handle his absence but then she is tough , Sandy is.
All of us who knew Jim are going to have to be tough. His untimely death leaves such an uncertainty. He wore big shoes. Jim has become part of the Ossabaw story. What greater legacy could one ask for? God rest.

"To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition, to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

I am so sad to hear of Jim's passing. He was an excellent and very knowledgeable host to our educators' group on Ossabaw last year. He really went above and beyond for us. I know that he will be sorely missed by Mrs. West, friends, family, the "people" of Ossabaw and all the "its" who visit.

To Jack and the Bitler family:
I've know Jim since he was at Ossabaw and have brought school groups there via UGA Marine Extension. In the winter we would bring Shamrock Middle School fifth graders there in January, a rough month! Jim would always great us at the dock and say "I can't believe you came out in this weather," yet he would always have a fire burning in the club house so we could dry out and warm up! I also come every summer with a teacher workshop for a long weekend with Jim. He is the expert guide and has awed them all! Mrs. Sandy West and Jim are Ossabaw's heart and soul and I will miss him terribly. Oceans of love, Mare Timmons

To Jim
You drove the trucks you walked the beach you watched the sun rise from the east and set to the west. You saw Mrs. West -you helped her through the times that people need you and for other people too.
You were there for all the donkeys.
The wishes you had may or may not come true but for one thing you made mine come true.
I got to know a lot about the stuff I loved and best of all I got to know someone as cool as you. Just to have shared some memories with someone like you is the best thing a person can ask for even though you’re gone you will never leave cause you’re always in my heart.
You made it really fun there… you will always be a part of everyone’s life . You will be missed much!

Eleven "Arts on the Coast" visual artists in Richmond Hill, GA had planned a weekend for a year to go to Ossabaw Island and make marks on paper or canvas or photograph. We arrived on Friday April 1st 2011 and stayed until Sunday afternoon. The boat was loaded down with food, clothes, art easels and paints and cameras and then... Jim met us at the dock with such a broad smile and casual warm manner..we were so innocent... looking back now, just twelve days later. Jim captured our hearts immeditely. During our time on this most pristine Island he wove his stories with laughter, animals, names, history, his love and care for Mrs.West, all the places he took us and the way he shared his affection and knowledge for all that exists on the Island .. He wove them and himself into our hearts and souls. Really, the beautiful marks we made on paper cannot compare with the branding he put on our hearts. We will dedicate a wall of "Ossabaw Art - Eleven-1" (with photographs of Jim and our art)to the Memory of Jim Bitler at the Arts on the Coast Spring Show at the R.H. City Center,The opening is April 25,6pm-8:30pm.Please join us everyone!
Jim, You were already an old friend, who I met as a new friend, and I will forever be changed by you and will be a better person to move on without you. Thank-you.

Jim was such a gracious and helpful person. When I brought a group once, he found out I liked Flamingos and brought me a plastic one to put by my tent during my stay. I posted the picture of the two of us with the Flamingo on Facebook today. He helped me for many many years when I brought students from The University of Tennessee. What a great loss to those who loved him and to all the Ossabaw lovers. Claudia Melear

Ossabaw Island will not be the same without Jim and his two very cute terriers. He had so many stories and was a wealth of information. I dare say that there was anyone who knew the island and all those involved with the island better. He truly will be missed by us at the University of Tennessee and so many others.

We shared food, wine, stories, Budweiser, storms, holidays, mischief, parties, vacations, Christmas ornaments, hurricane evacuations, hairbrushes, mothers, mothers-in-law, grandmothers, daughters, nieces, nephews, and the BEST hugs.

Jim is the only other person I know who cries over fine china and is okay with it.

Thank you, sweet Jim for being in my world for so many wonderful, unforgettable years. Your parenting advice was unmatched - often unheeded, always appreciated - but unmatched.

I will love you forever.

Nobody else ever called me Bananz. Nobody else would have shown up to my 9th birthday party and told my best friend she was the worst child in history. Nobody else could have better explained how to pour a glass of wine, (no louder than a lady's sigh) and nobody else will ever hold a more special place in my heart.

"Elbow, elbow, wrist, wrist
Touch your pearls, then switch.
Elbow, elbow, wrist, wrist
Wipe a tear, blow a kiss."

I love you, Jim.

Jim was indeed a treasure, a warm, funny, caring and compassionate man who loved Ossabaw. There is no doubt that he will be sorely missed by all who have had the great pleasure of having known him. I can say with great confidence that Ossabaw is forever changed because of the spirit and enthusiasm of Jim. Anyone who has ever pulled up to the dock and was greeted by Jim knew instantly that he BELONGED there. Depending on the day, you were either greeted with a genuine smile, or a witty, sarcastic remark. Despite having a perfectly beautiful home in Savannah, Jim chose to spend his days trying to clue the rest of us in on what
made Ossabaw so unbelievably special. I can't imagine who will love Paul Mitchell with such gusto.
Jim, I doubt that you are reading online guest books in your absence, but in the odd chance you are, know that I am devastated that I will not see the crows feet around your eyes, or be able to sit on the front porch and listen to one of your stories (for the hundredth time!). What great memories you have left for us all.
Hugs to you Jack.I am so sorry for your loss, but happy for the 18 years you got.

When we traveled to Ossawbaw years ago with a pack of 7th grade students from Shamrock Middle School, Jim was as much a highlight of the trip as the beauty of the island. His knowledge, warmth and quick wit made our visit so much more meaningful. Thanks Jim.

I am humbled by all the messages from those who knew Jim in his professional capacity. He was truly appreciated and loved. My own message is more personal. Having come to Ossabaw for 70 years, I can say that Jim's presence lighted my life in a way that no one else's did. He always greeted me with enthusiasm and a warm hug, which was much appreciated. His attendance on my mother and his frequent calls to me to report were welcome and well beyond the call of duty. It was not part of his job. He did it out of love for my mother and for his. To say I will miss him is to understate the truth. I loved him.

I met Jim while working on a nature series for Georgia Public Television probably 20 years ago on Little St. Simon's Island and became fast friends. Although I haven't seen him in about 10 years, I have always felt his friendship in my soul. He had such a great knowledge of nature and a way to make anyone in his prescience know and understand the true meaning of our natural world. He will be truely missed . Jack, I am so very sorry for your loss...my heart goes out to you. I know Ossabaw Island has lost it's favorite son...

Dear Jim,
How will we miss you? Let me count the ways, 1) Your warmth, generosity of spirit and love of life. 2) Your enthusiasm for all that interested you which was a great deal indeed. 3) Your deep and abiding dedication and love for your partner Jack, which was an inspiration for the rest of us. 4) Your incredibly creative and resourceful spirit. 5) Your kindness towards and love shown to your many friends of which I am fortunate enough to be one. 6) Your endless storytelling, so many incredibly funny stories. 7) Your loving devotion to your equally-gifted Mother Douglass. 8) Your love of nature, especially the beautiful natural world that is Ossabaw Island, GA.
There's more of course but Brad tells me that this is too long already so I'll close by sending a message of love to you and Jack and Pat and Jon and Dee and the many other lives you have touched so profoundly. You will be dearly missed our dear Jim.

Jim Bitler was the ultimate host for the students of Shamrock Middle School and our yearly trips to visit Ossabaw. I met him on my first trip to that magical place in 2003 and enjoyed his stories and guidance on our many subsequent trips - the most recent early in March of this year - unfortunate for me I was not able to go on that one and was looking forward to next year. What a great loss for all of us and for Ossabaw Island. He will be missed.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

I was so sorry to hear about Jim Bitler's untimely death. The Ossabaw Island Foundation has done a terrific job helping the State of Georgia interpret and accommodate education and visitation to Ossabaw Island. When I gave the go-ahead years ago while serving as DNR Commissioner for establishment of the Foundation, little did I dream that it would grow and be as effective and functional as it has been. There are a number of folks involved who have ensured its success, and Jim Bitler's contributions and leadership must not ever be forgotten. This man with incredible energies and enthusiasm will be missed, and I am glad I had the chance to know him and his colleagues at the Ossabaw Island Foundation who are doing such a good job on that beautiful, special island.
