John Shuptrine Obituary

Mr. John Sylvester Shuptrine, III -Covington- Mr. John Sylvester Shuptrine, III, 85, died January 28, 2007. Mr. Shuptrine had lived in Covington for only a short time having moved from Odum, Ga in Wayne County. Mr. Shuptrine was born in Taylor Creek, Liberty County, Ga on March 2, 1921 to the late John Sylvester Shuptrine, Jr. and Maggie Wood Shuptrine. Mr. Shuptrine servied in the US Army during World War II and was on Omaha Beach during the 10th hour. He retired from Georgia State University as the Assistant Registar. After his retirement in 1980 Mr. Shuptrine returned to Odum. He was a member and former Sunday School teacher at Odum United Methodist Church. Mr Shuptrine was also a former mayor of Odum and beloged to several civic related organizations. He was past President of the AARP, the Odum Lions Club, the Retired Educators Association, and the Wayne County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. He also served on the Odum City Council, the Wayne County Industrial Authority and the Wayne County Tourism Board. He was a Mason and Shriner. Survivors include his wife, Ms. Barbara D. Shuptrine of Covington; Daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and David Ferguson of Lawrenceville, Janet and Michael Steger of Suwanee; step-daughters, Jennifer and Charles Ammons of Convington, Margaret and joseph Jung of Annandale, VA; brother, George Shuptrine of Odum, GA; sisters, Mrs. Mary S. Toolte of Reidsville, Mrs. Lois S. Hinchey of Gainesville, Fl, Mrs. Christine S. McLeroy of Riverdale; sister-in-law, Mrs. Daniel Wood (Catherine) Shuptrine of Odum; grandchildren, Beth Scalzitti, Michelle Caddell; step-grandchildren, Matthew Steger, Kim Lang, Sarah Kate Ammons, Heidi Elissa Jung; and six great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service for Mr. Shuptrine will be held on January 31, 2007 at 1pm from the Odum United Methodist Church with Rev. Darrell Carter and Rev. Julian Tucker officiating, the family will receive friends hour prior to the serevice at the church with Interment in the Odum City Cemetery. J. C. Harwell & Son Funeral Home and Cremation Chapel in Covington, Ga is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the Hospice of South Georgia, 117 Drennon Drive, Jesup, GA 31545. J. C.
