Judge Thomas M. Odom

Thomas Odom Obituary

Millen, GA-Judge Thomas Mitchell Odom, 76, died Tuesday, December 28, 2004 following a brief battle with cancer. Judge Odom was known as a skilled courtroom attorney in the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit and surrounding circuits for 56 years. Judge Odom was born in Chatham County, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Dixon Odom and Limerick Lamar Odom, attorney, as well as a brother, Limerick Lamar Odom, Jr. Judge Odom was educated in Screven County Schools, graduated from Cumberland University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Laws degree at the age of 18. After passing the State Bar of Georgia, Judge Odom opened practice in Sylvania and Millen. Public Service for Judge Odom's career includes Solicitor of the City Court of Millen for eight years, City Attorney for ten years, Judge of the State Court of Jenkins County for sixteen years. He was a member of the American Bar Association, Georgia Bar Association, Georgia Trial Lawyer s Association and served as Vice-President of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. Judge Odom was also recognized for his work as the first editor of The Verdict, the official publication for the GAPTA, Georgia Plaintiff Trial Attorneys. This recognition was bestowed upon him by the GAPTA at the Carter Center in Atlanta. Judge Odom was appointed by the Honorable Governor Roy Barnes on May 28, 2001 as a Senior Judge of the State Court of Georgia. Judge Odom was a member of the Millen United Methodist Church, having served teacher of the Men's Bible Class and as president of the Men's Leadership Class. He was also a member of the Millen Lions Club and the Alee Temple Shrine of the Masonic Lodge. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Marolyn Bragg Odom, four sons, and daughters -in -law, Thomas Mitchell Odom, Jr. and Crysty McLeod Odom of Bogart, Richard Dixon Odom and Vickie Craig Odom of Millen, John Brian Odom and Lynn Norris Odom of Swanee, and Robin Lamar Odom and Wendy Lewis Odom of Savannah, his grandchildren, Thomas Mitchell Odom III, Alexander McLeod Odom, Megan Victoria Odom, Craig Elliott Odom, John Brice Odom, Brett Norris Odom, Christian Thomas Odom, Mary Kate Odom and Matthew Lewis Odom. Visitation for family and friends will be held Wednesday, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Crowe-Fields Funeral. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Millen United Methodist Church with Rev. George Durham and Rev. Bill Hammon officiating. Burial will follow in the Millen Cemetery. Mr.Odom was a great lawer, and twice that a GREAT MAN to know and talk to. A friend to everyone who has ever had the pleasure of meeting him. Surely will be missed. Our quiet little town has lost another one of our cornerstones. May GOD bless him and his family.
