Brian Mar Obituary

Dr. Brian W. MAR Dr. Brian W. Mar passed away March 12, 2005. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly fifty years, Hazel Woo Mar. He is survived by his children and their spouses and children, Melanie, Bruce and Chloe Chow; Marnie Mar, Butch, Marissa and Patrick Francisco; Murray, Marji, Marissa and Marques Mar; Monte and Heather Mar; and Mimi Mar, Marc and Yoshi Takeno. Brian was employed by Boeing as a Research Physicist for 10 years before becoming a professor at the University of Washington in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Science, a position he held for 30 years. In addition to teaching and conducting Research in Environmental Systems Management, he developed courses in systems engineering and held the Boeing Professorship in Systems Engineering. Brian was the driving force in the creation of the International Council of Systems Engineers (INCOSE) and served as its president in the early 1990s. He published hundreds of papers and several books applying systems engineering to environmental, defense, and urban systems. Additionally, Brian developed training courses in systems engineering for several government agencies and many major aerospace, electronic, and computer corporations. After retiring from the University of Washington in 1997, he served as a volunteer instructor for South and West Seattle Senior Centers and King County Libraries teaching computer courses. Brian also was an AARP driver safety instructor. Brian's ashes will be scattered in the waters off of Hawaii to join those of his wife, Hazel. The family requests that any memorials be given to the Professor Brian W. Mar Memorial Fund at the University of Washington, College of Engineering, P.O. Box 352180, Seattle, WA 98195 to support students studying Systems Engineering. A Celebration of Brian's Life will be held Saturday, March 19th at 11:00 a.m. at the Japanese Presbyterian Church, 1801 24th Ave South, Seattle.
