Gregory Barlow Obituary

Gregory Paul Barlow

Major General Gregory P. Barlow

passed away peacefully on July 4 at the age of 74, due to complications from Alzheimer's Disease.

Barlow was born in Charleston, West Virginia, on July 16, 1939. He graduated from Highline High School in Burien in 1957 and from Seattle University with a Master of Arts degree in administration in 1966.

From 1989 until his retirement in 1999 Barlow served as Adjutant General of the State of Washington, during which he commanded the Washington Army and Air National Guard, consisting of over 8,000 soldiers and airmen. His distinguished military career began in 1964 when he was commissioned as a second lieutenant through the ROTC. He entered into active duty in 1966, and served in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968 as a Special Forces aviation officer, completing more than 1,000 combat flight hours. Prior to appointment as Adjutant General, Major General Barlow served as the Commander, 81st Infantry Brigade (Mechanized) which was round out to the 9th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington.

Throughout his military career Greg received numerous meritorious honors. Some of his major awards and declarations included the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, and Purple Heart, among many others.

Additionally, Barlow served as executive director of the Medina Foundation. His numerous civic affiliations included Boy Scouts of America; Chief Seattle Council; Pacific Northwest Grantmakers Forum; United Way of King County; Washington State Department of Social Health Services; Seattle Rotary Club; Pioneer Broadcasting Company; Adjutants General Association of the US; National Guard Associations of the US and Washington; Association of the US Army; and American Legion Foundation of Seattle.

Greg was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Rosita ("Zita") Barlow. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Eli; his daughter, Ona Steigenga and son-in-law Richard Steigenga of Snohomish; his son, Eric Barlow and daughter-in-law Shauna Barlow of Bellevue, and grandchildren, Dillon, Alex, Joshua and Natalie - all of whom he adored.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, July 11, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Covington, followed by internment at Tahoma National Cemetery. A celebration of life will follow at 1:00pm at Meridian Valley Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Western and Central Washington State Chapter, in Greg's name. Sign Greg's online

He was a man among men.....all his accomplishments out shine most of us normal men who can only hope to
one day be compared to him.....a natural leader.
I loved him as the brother I never had....wish we could have got back together before his passing.

Greg and I were close buddies in the early 50's in St Albans, WV....he went to Charleston Catholic HS and I went to St Albans HS...we would compare our football accomplishments (he was superior in all he did)...I tried to find him in the later years (was told erroneously he became a Priest, which made perfect sense to me) but was not able to find him til I GOOGLED him a couple of years ago and found his retirement article. Then I was unable to find his phone number and gave up....wish I hadn't. He was unique even in High School...so handsome and personable...I could never be anything close to what he was...one of God's special people...I will always remember him with fondness and love...
RIP Greg...Jim Dayhaw an OLD friend.

In the early 90s MG Barlow was gracious enough to grant me an interview for the "Evergreen" magazine of the WA Army & Air National Guard, where I discovered he was a leader filled with empathy for those he commanded, and inspired us all to excellence in performing our duties. He shared his deep wisdom generously and set an outstanding example to follow. He had few peers, and was loved by his troops. May he rejoice in heaven forever.

Greg attended Charleston Catholic High School in Charleston WV but did not graduate with our class in 1957. At class reunions, we often talked about his accomplishments and what a great guy he was. We are so sorry to hear of his passing. We will keep Greg and the family in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Eli and Family,
I met Greg in the mid-90's when he was the TAG and I was in the job search mode. In the course of the discussion he was the consummate gentlemen and sharing our common college, Seattle University, we grew closer. In his Medina Foundation role and in my Red Cross role in Seattle, we interacted several times and it was exceptionally professional and always wonderful to be in his presence. I miss his professional touch and his modest demeanor. I count myself lucky to have met Greg in my life.
All of my best,

The Barlow's knew when I was going through the same loving care for my wife Betty suffering with the same that MG. Barlow went through.
Our thought's and prayers now are extended to his lovely wife Ely.

Our deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers go out to Eli and family. Greg was a soldier's soldier whose legacy will live on as an inspiration for others to follow. "Attack!" was the word inscribed on his sword and total dedication to his soldiers and country was what was written in his heart. Greg, while you will certainly be missed by those who were privileged to know and serve with you, rest now and know that you will never be forgotten. Thank You!!!!

I met Greg in the early 1970s in his Medina Foundation office after my friend Booth Gardner had referred me to him for advice. Over the years of getting to know Greg, I found him to be a natural and charismatic leader, with a unique combination of steel and heart. Booth once said that when Greg walked into a room, you could feel the energy change. My heartfelt condolences to Eli and Greg's family for the loss of this extraordinary man.

I had the pleasure of spending time with Greg Barlow during his stay at Emeritus at Harbour Pointe Shores. He spoke fondly of his beloved wife Eli, his children and grandchildren. His greatest memory was for the soldiers that he was in command over and I believe that he is still watching over them now from above. You can rest now General Barlow as your command is finished and all is good and your troops are safe sir..My condolences to Eli and family..

Dear Eli and family,
I am truly sorry for the premature loss of your husband, father, and grandfather. I am also very sorry that I am unable to attend the services and celebration of his life tomorrow.
I had the pleasure of serving as his Assistant AG for the Army National Guard of Wash. the last six months of my service before retirement in 1989. It was one of the major highlights of my career. He had incredible insight and leadership ability.
May our Lord's peace and blessings be with you and yours, particularly in the immediate days ahead.

council during the early 90's when he

He was instrumental in charting a course that led to a successful turn-

Greg Barlow was a great friend, an outstanding military officer and pilot. Adjutant General for the Washington State National Guard from 1989 to 1999, his skillful leadership was instrumental improving the facilities at Camp Murray and the readiness level of the Washington State National Guard, both in the Army and Air Force. Greg set high standards for all, was a great leader and will be sorely missed.

MG Barlow was truly a leader who left a legacy for all leaders to follow. He commanded thousands, yet always had time to care for individual soldiers and family members. He was the last person to shake my hand when I boarded the plane to deploy to Desert Storm. He was the first person to greet me when I returned home from the war. His concluding remark at the end of every presentation he made as a commander inspired all of us. "Attack!"

I met Greg in 1982 in which I was his driver during our times at the Yakima firing range as part of the 803rd Armor Bn, WA. During this time I got to know this great Officer and how his mentorship and leadership would affect my life. This warrior changed my life forever. Thanks to him I was able to go attend U.S Army helicopter flight school, and start a career in the Army that I had only dreamed of. He has touched so many people and will be missed by many.

I stand and Salute you Sir! RIP.

First met Greg 1983 when he commanded the 81st Bde WA NG tank battalion during 9th ID maneuvers at Yakima Firing Center. A brilliant field soldier and commander. Probably the best battalion commander I ever observed.

Continued to watch Greg with admiration throughout his distinguished career. He was the epitome of what a citizen soldier could be. A man of enormous integrity, personal courage, great judgment and compassion.

Greg was always full-on engaged...but he made it seem easy.

Lots of us are better people from having learned by his example.

Greg and I served together in the Vietnam War. He was an 0-1 Bird Dog pilot and I was in the IV Mike Force, 5th Special Forces. Although his mission was visual reconnaissance, he burdened his small aircraft with four machine guns and supported us by directly engaging the enemy from dangerously low altitudes. Whenever one of our units was in trouble, he'd refuel and rearm, and remain on station long into the night until the situation stabilized.

In appreciation for his exceptional dedication, bravery, and flying skills, our unit presented him with a Green Beret. He was a great friend and soldier, and I'm honored to have known him.

I pray that Eli and his children are comforted that he no longer suffers and they find strength through God's grace.
