Janice Woolley Obituary

Dr. Janice Whitehead Woolley MD FAAP

Dr. Janice Whitehead Woolley passed away peacefully on January 26, 2018 at her home on Mercer Island. She died from complications of multiple myeloma cancer. Her initial prognosis was three to five years, but Jan lived eleven years filled with joy, travel, and devotion to her family and church. Her husband, two of her siblings, her children, and a number of her grandchildren lovingly attended her final days.

Dr. Woolley was born to Dr. Calvert W. Whitehead and Norma Laws Whitehead on June 21, 1940 in Salt Lake City, and after spending her youth in Indianapolis, returned to Utah to study at Brigham Young University in Provo. She completed medical school at the Indiana University a and then completed her pediatric residency at Children's Hospital in Seattle. She met John Dudley Woolley PhD in Seattle and the two were married July 12, 1968 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.

After completing her residency, Janice began practicing medicine on Mercer Island, where she spent nearly four decades as a pediatrician and behavioral medicine specialist. Many called her "Dr. Jan"-or even "St. Jan" because of her selfless devotion to her patients, community, and family. On more than one occasion, she was voted one of Seattle's top doctors.

Jan was loved by her patients, colleagues, and all who knew her. She had a remarkable ability to listen to and care for others, including those she knew well and complete strangers.

She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, reading, writing, traveling, watching films, doing family history, and serving others through her medical practice, church and temple work. She loved music and played the marimba and piano.

Jan was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and testified to her profound faith with an irreproachable life characterized by kindness, humility, compassion, dignity, wisdom, humor, and fortitude.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. John Dudley Woolley, and their four children: James Douglas Woolley, Jennifer Woolley Pugmire (and her husband, Jon), Jeffrey Dean Woolley (and his wife, Andrea), and Joseph David Woolley (and his wife, Mary).

Janice, the eldest of five siblings, is also survived by Norene Gay, Marilyn Taggart, Dexter Whitehead, and Alisha Clarke. She has nine grandchildren (Natalie, Rebecca, Aubrey, Nathan, Justin, Izabella, Zoltn, Mariah, and Joshua) and three great grandchildren (Karson, Keegan, and Kaiser). She is preceded in death by her grandchildren, Jonathan and Jack.

Jan leaves an incredible legacy of love, service, and compassion that will be carried on by the many people whose lives she touched.

I had the privilege and pleasure of working with Janice Woolley from 1991 until she retired. I, as well as a group of contractors who worked for me, did the transcription for the entire clinic on Mercer Island. As transcriptionists we always hoped to get the easiest to understand speaker to transcribe. Jan was one of those people. I had to rotate the transcriptionists as everyone wanted to transcribe her notes. Her calm demeanor and compassion were evident in her dictations. I fondly remember those days.

Dr. Woolley was our daughter's pediatrician. One day when she was 10 years old Nicole hit her head sledding and cut it open. We called Dr. Woolley, who lived a block away, and she said she would need to get Nicole to the office to do the stitching, but snow made the road impassible. I told her I had a 4 wheel drive, so I picked her up and the 3 of us went to the office. Power was off there, so I assisted Dr. Woolley with a flashlight in one hand and glove in the other. We all had a good laugh!

Dwight and I were very sad to get this news. Jan was a very caring neighbor and pediatrician to our three sons. She also tended to us when we needed her. Dwight, me and our oldest son Martin, caught a terrible flu when our baby Matthew was 5 weeks old. One evening during our illness Dwight passed out from an allergic reaction to codeine. He hit the corner of our dresser and split his lip open at 1:00am. I immediately called Jan next door. She came right over with her doctor bag and butterflied him up. I remember how supportive she was when we were in such distress! Truly a special soul!

Dr. Woolley was our family doctor for as long as I can remember, and a dear friend to my Mother, Kathy Smith. I enjoyed catching up with Jan at my own Mom's funeral not too long ago and I imagine them embracing, now as friends on the other side. Much love to your family, and also to the woman who spent so much of her life in the service of others.

Condolences to the family. Dr. Wooley was wonderful to our family--My son was diagnosed with ADHD and she was so sweet, kind, knowledgable, and helpful to us-- and so very patient with my young son explaining things to him and helping him through medication changes. She was so supportive to the family and we are forever grateful for her exceptional care.

I met Dr Woolley in Renton 4th Ward & she was my children's pediatrician until they were in the later years of high school. She was the kindest Dr & that is a very important quality to me. My mother also had multiple myeloma & died at age 75. My deepest condolences to her family; a great loss.

My deepest sympathies to all of Jan's family. I had the great pleasure of working with Jan when she was with Virginia Mason on Mercer Island and later at Puget Sound Behavioral Medicine. I will always remember her as being one of the most admirable people I have met in my entire life. Jan passed through this life with dignity, grace and compassion like no other. She was a very special person and her memory will live on in the lives of all she touched. I nicknamed her St. Janice of Mercer Island, but she truly was a saint living amongst us. We will all miss her dearly for as long as we each shall live, but thankful her pain and suffering is over.
